my fuel gage started having a mind of its on it would be on E when it's not but suddenly it started working correctly. Exactly one day later while I was driving on the freeway at 55mph my rpms started shooting up now one week later  when I go over 35 I hear a clinking soundfrom the rear is it my fuel pump? - 2004 silverado

money says yes, it is the early warning signs of your fuel pump going bad.

fuel pump wont make a clicking sound, maybe a ujoint? fuel guage is a chronic problem with all GM products, unfortunatly the cure is to replace the fuel pump module in the tank. depending on how rusty the lines are it maybe easier to remove the bed to do it instead of opening a can of worms with the fuel and brake lines. I find when dropping the tank its easier to cut the fuel lines just in front of the tank and drop the tank with them still connected to the pump then put them back together with compression fittings. as for the rpm thing did the engine race or did just the tach go haywire? if just the tach your cluster may be on its way out which could affect the fuel guage as well

Pulling the bed is super easy.  I did it when I had to change out my fuel pump on my 2002 Silverado.  Just need an extra person to lift the bed off.  Some even just prop it up, but I would be worried about it moving and causing damage.
