Col gmc Posted January 25, 2022 Posted January 25, 2022 Well after 2 years of problems with the 8"touch screen on my 2017 gmc Sierra I have finally fixed it it would randomly change stations and flick icons as if you were touching the screen, hours of investigating poor earth's and low voltage as suggested on various forums but to no avail, my truck is a personal import into the UK so no dealer back up here I decided to remove the screen and disconnect the touch digitizer from the screen by unplugging the brown ribbon cable put the screen back in the truck and everything worked OK, obviously the touch doesn't but I could use the buttons below to navigate the screen and radio icons so all functions now worked without any problems, after driving for a few weeks with no problems I was confident that the touch digitizer was the cause of the original problem, ordered a new one from China as GM buy them from there just $239 plus shipping for the screen and digitizer as I didn't fancy trying to remove the digitizer off the original screen, a week later it arrived now installed and working perfectly Thought I would share this as I didn't think it would be such a cheap fix, 1 3

I will share your findings. mine is very intermittent thanks
Col gmc Posted January 30, 2022 Author Posted January 30, 2022 Yes install was very easy just need to be careful with ribbon conecters and the cable plug pins that go through the rear of the screen cover took less than half an hour, when my problems started they were very intermittent and always cleared if I stopped the truck for a few minutes and restarted but became more frequent with time 1
pokismoki Posted January 30, 2022 Posted January 30, 2022 i offten wonder if the bezel that covers and surrounds the screen where to touch or rub the screen by fitting too tightly, would this be the cause of the erradic function in the radio? 1

Did you use an online tutorial to guide the removal of old screen and install the new one? A link would be super helpful, if you have one. My 2016 Silverado has this same problem, and I've just come from the dealership, where they quoted me $800 parts and labor to change out the screen. That's on top of the $100 I paid today for diagnostics. Thinking of tackling it by myself and looking for any helpful hints. Thanks!
Tucker Posted July 3, 2022 Posted July 3, 2022 Try a search on Youtube. I am sure somebody has posted a video on changing out the screen.
Capt Bob Posted July 5, 2022 Posted July 5, 2022 (edited) Dash removal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1LbnbqijD8 Screen removal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9P6XKjM2bE Since I too suffer this problem, I'm going to remove the brown ribbon cable (seen in the second vid) from the PC board and confirm that the screen works sans the touch component. Run it like that for awhile before replacing the actual screen itself. Time will tell. Edited July 5, 2022 by Capt Bob

Capt Bob Posted July 14, 2022 Posted July 14, 2022 Into the second week of the digitizer cable "unplug" and everything is back to normal. Kudos to Col GMC for the idea. As stated, most all controls work the screen though I continue to wade through the menus. Still, I'm in for the long haul in seeing how this works before (if ever) replacing the digitizer screen itself.
Wyatt1963 Posted July 26, 2022 Posted July 26, 2022 I finally got around to replacing the digitizer. No more jumpy screen. I had already purchased the new digitizer before I saw this post so once I removed it I just replaced it. It took me about 30-45 minutes thanks to all the support/video links etc...on this site. I appreciate it.
David Coulbourne Posted December 4, 2023 Posted December 4, 2023 I just replaced the digitizer lcd monator on my 2015 gmc sierra with one I bought off Amazon, sold by Dngbymx auto parts, and my screen is black, radio works, but you have to change stations thru steering wheel, anyone experanced this ?

If you replaced just the digitizer/glass, its probably one of the ribbon cables you had to remove to do the work. Un clip them again, blow any dust off them and make sure they are completely seated before pushing the clip back down to secure. (Aka your screen can't be black/off because of the new digitizer, it's just a dumb piece of glass that figures out where your finger touched it.
Hoover98 Posted December 12, 2023 Posted December 12, 2023 I’ve been having problems with my touchscreen for the last few months. Almost seems like, as mentioned above, something is pressing against the screen along the left side because it almost always switches to the middle icon on the CarPlay screen. Now, the last week or two, I’ve started to notice the small display behind the steering wheel is acting up, switching to the audio info on its own. It doesn’t change anything on the radio, but the speedo display shifts to audio with no input from me. None of my buttons on the wheel appear to be stuck. Any ideas on a fix, or if they are related or not?
ejohnson120900 Posted May 22, 2024 Posted May 22, 2024 (edited) We have a 2018 Silverado and have an issue with the screen. It doesn’t change channels on its own but it does glitch really bad and will sometimes go black. Radio works, the screen seems to be the issue. Any ideas? 175BBADB-AF3D-4663-83E8-E7CF3EACD00A.mov Edited May 22, 2024 by ejohnson120900
