Tailgate Ramps

Hi All -

 

Sorry for the most boring topic ever!

 

I need a set of tailgate ramps.  They have to be solid-ish to roll smaller tire things up like generators, handcarts, etc.  (vs ATVs/motorcycles where you can use grated ramps). 
 

There are a ton of options.  My fear is the height of our gates on the HD and getting a decent inclination.  
 

Anyone have any they really like?

OK.  Short of an opinion, can someone give me the height of the tailgate/bed when open?  I don’t have access to the truck at the moment.  A little HS trig will tell me how long I should go to get a decent angle.

My 3500HD 4x4 CC/SB is about 39" with the bed empty.  Of course that will depend on the angle the truck is parked at.

I have a preference to 9' ramps that fold in half lengthwise.  But I just load dirt bikes, so I use light weight aluminum folding rung type.

Thanks for the response. Only ones I see that has a semi-solid surface are about 7.5’.  That’s around 26 degrees so it should be OK I suppose.

If terrain allows it's easiest to just back the rear wheels into a ditch, lower the tailgate, then drive/push it right in level.

 

If you do use ramps the grates are of no real consequence and provide a better foothold when loading stuff in the rain.

If you have a multi-flex gate, make sure you read your owner's manual.

Oh dang.  I didn’t think of that. As mentioned, I don’t have access to the truck at the moment so I will look it up online.  
 

That’s a great call and I appreciate the reminder.   I’m guessing I will have to drop the inner part or distribute the weight somehow.

Yeah, the Owner's Manual says not to put ramp loads on the inner tailgate (the multiflex part). Doesn't even give a load rating, just says "don't do it".  

 

Something to consider would be to cut and zip-tie aluminum diamond plate to a couple of standard aluminum motorcycle ramps.  If you get the reusable commercial zip ties, you'd have a pretty flexible system.  The two 9' folding ramps I bought are rated for 750lbs each, and were about $70 each on sale.  I like the way the fold in half.  I've zip-tied them together for a makeshift "bed extender". that worked pretty good. 

Zip Ties, Bungy Cords and tie-down straps.  Never leave home outwith them... lol

 

Side note: the opening width of the Multiflex part of the tail gate on my truck is 50" wide.  So if you get a single ramp it would need to be less than 50" to fit.

I bought a set of these years ago, work pretty well. You can cut the 2x10 to any length you need, so custom for your application.
