I've read multiple posts where members mention noticing this or that "when the diesel particulate filter is in the regen cycle." How would one know when the filter is in the regen cycle? I run a VeePeak OBD meter with OBD Fusion and even it does not have the capability to indicate a regen cycle. Am I missing something?

I have the same App and Bluetooth OBD II reader. It does actually have the capability to indicate a regen cycle. 
 

In OBD Fusion you need to look at the PiD “DPF Regen Status”. It will either be a 0 or a 1.

If it’s 0, regen is not happening.

If it’s a 1, regen is happening

 

Other than that. You will notice a significant increase in EGTs during regen if you’re monitoring them. Also hear an audible change from the exhaust.

Oh cool thanks, any idea how to display the transmission gear? "Transmission Actual Gear Status" PiD does not seem to work.

Only lasts about 11 or 12 miles on an LM2, so it's easy to miss. 

 

(and GM intends it to be a non-event requiring nothing from the operator)

I’m not sure. I looked around (not real hard) but didn’t find anything. Hopefully someone else has an answer because I’d like to know as well.

 

It should be possible to see, I just don’t know how to do it in OBD fusion.

If you speed (mph) isn't at least mid 60's it's likely not in 10th.

 

2021 3.0

Banks iDash

 

DPF SL - soot load as  %

REGEN - active or off

DPF regen % (indicates as % how close to next recgen; it isn't always the soot load that triggeres regen)

LSTRGN - Miles since completion of last regen

Boost pressure

EGT

DEF Level

Current gear, and if locked or not (the only time I've seen it unlocks is in first gear and stopped or very close to stopped)

(mine usually used as a 2 lane driver and usually regens in the 200 - 300 mile range)

I track regens (just cuz I can) and iirc this is the longest regen interval one this truck has had. 

Black dot on top blue bar is an LED. Blinks (green) during regen. when it is logging data. (camera caught in the 'off' portion of blink) 

 

idash can be configured to display any of about a 100 items that the truck monitors.

Number and configuration of display is easily changed. 

8 is the max it can display at once.

Groups of 8 can be saved for easy switching.

The data collecting version can save data for many many items at once.

Tell me more about this LED. What did you do to set up the flashing? I don't recall mine having an LED though. This is my set up:

Good catch.

 I had a brain fart.

 

It's the data logging version of the iDash. (they call it DataMonster, iirc)

The LED flashes to indicate that it is recording. 

 

I'll edit the original post. 

( I always run with it logging data, so it would have been blinking) 

 

 

From iDash  1.8 manual:

When viewing the Gauge Screen of the primary iDash 1.8, a green dot
at the top of the display will flash indicating that the device is logging.
When logging is turned off, this dot will not appear.

I've only had my truck a short time but the smell was the other thing I noticed when I hit Regen the first time. I was at the end of a 30mile/30minute drive and I noticed a smell coming from my truck when I came to a stop. The exhaust was louder and I checked my MPG for the past 25 miles and it was a good bit lower than it normally would be showing after that drive. But yeah it's not SUPER obvious when it happens but if you're paying attention to your truck you'll usually catch it when it happens. GM wants the act to be completely transparent to the user and will warn you if the particulates are still too high and wants you to keep driving to burn it off. The manual says the DIC will light up telling you it wasn't able to clean it up and needs you to keep driving. I kind of want to get one of those idash modules though because a huge part of my job is monitoring IT systems so I always like knowing what data my vehicle holds.

    • I will admit I haven't experimented much with pressure drops beyond the numbers I put in and part of that is that the numbers I used are fairly low and then found out it would trigger regardless at that 35 psi. Having said that I had tried before had changed the placard pressures and being that I have a 1 ton set to 80 on the placard for the rear I believe it triggered close to 60, the front I don't recall now for sure but thought maybe it could get close to 45 from that factory 60 placard pressure. So I never did figure out if it was a number of psi from placard pressure to the alarm or a percentage of the total placard number as some figured it was like a 25% drop from placard pressure would trigger it. So as to try and answer your question, I believe I set the placard pressure on the front to 47 or so and while I run the front tires at 40, they have dipped below that some if its colder and I haven't put "winter air" in yet and never once have had the front alarm go off. I would say that the answer your looking for is no, that if you set your placard pressure to 45, you have a certain amount of room to drop below that pressure before the alarm will go off.    The pressures you decide to run in your truck, that ends up being what makes sense to you based on what your carrying in your truck or if towing, then have to bump them back up to something that will carry the load in the rear and the fronts typically left at the same pressure. It all comes down to that chart I put the link to and using an accurate roadside scale to be your guide, both unloaded and then loaded to know your minimum safe pressures.    I just wish GM would allow a person to change the readings for the tire pressures to the English system of pounds as I have to look at that goofy metric reading that will never ever jive in my head and will go over and change it just to figure out what they are if need be and then change it back. 
    • That part I understand, that the dealer can do it. But I'm not understanding why updates that were available to the truck since it left the factory, or the dealership originally, would not still be available to it without dealer intervention.   I'm thinking along the lines of recalls. They stay available until they are completed. Why not updates as well, especially since some of those can be safety related also?
    • That's good to know, but I don't think I'll even be running them under 45 in the rear  unless it's on the sand or something but will only be for a short distance anyways!    I didn't read all the instructions in the booklet yet, but do you know let's say I set the rear psi on the placard to 45, will the warning light come on soon as it drops under 45 or is there a percentage it has to drop from the set value before the warning light is triggered?
    • That's bad.  Like, its probably destroying the stub axle the CV slides into.   Do you have a proper lift installed with differential lowering brackets?  Did you install AT4/Trail Boss factory CV axles?  
    • Hot? New Jersey? Today? I was working on my old 2000 Silverado 1500 today. Believe me, it was boiling hot today. As it has been.
