Hi I have a high mileage 2000 Silverado , broke the shift cable so I replaced it yesterday . I have it adjusted so it goes into all the gears, but here is the kicker. When I go to drive it it won’t shift out of 2nd gear . If I drop it to 1 and manually shift to 2 then 3 then drive , at 3 and drive it acts like it’s in neutral and I have to shift back down to 2. But if I stop and put it into drive it will take off and run fine except it won’t go past 2nd gear. What the hell has happened lol

not a guaranteed fix but turn the key to the run position but don't start it.  press and hold gas pedal to the floor.  after 12+ seconds, turn the key off while still holding it to the floor.  after the key is completely off, let off the pedal.  wait 2 minutes before starting the truck.  take it for a drive for minimum or 20 minutes without driving a steady speed for more than 30 seconds or so.  you're retraining the transmission at this point.  all you did was reset the tcm.  might work and may not.

if that doesn't work scan it for trans codes, and take it for a ride with a scan tool that does live data to see whats going on with it. I wish I had known that reset procedure before I fried the 4L80 in my 98 that wasn't shifting right

I don't understand how a simple cable replacement would affect he TCM.

Who told the TCM there was a new cable?

Does the TCM loose it's memory if you disconnect the shift indicator mechanism?

I get your point tho Doug, it shouldn't affect the programing, he probably has a bigger problem than that.

Just went out to mess with it again, I am having a hard time getting it into park and into 1st . I can get it there after several tries by shifting it several times one way or the other ? I can understand not getting it into one or the other , would need adjustment but how would I adjust to get it to go farther both ways ??

if it's securely in the bracket on the column and the side of the trans, possibly excess play in the shifter itself or in the trans. maybe time to drop the pan and take a look at the internal linkage but first scan it to make sure the shift solenoids are working so you can service them if they are not

so look at the utube videos , drop the pan, inspect the internal linkages and check/service the solenoids. a bi-directional scan tool can trigger the solenoids to see if they function properly. if 1 is bad it may be wise to service/replace all of them. LOTS of info in the utube vids

Ok I replaced my 2-3 shift solenoid and now it shifts just fine from 1 to 2 and has a hesitation going into 3, you have to let off the gas for a second ( acts like clutch is gone ) but once you let off it shifts into 3 just fine but still won’t go into drive or overdrive ?

So I have a 2000 gmc sierra 1500 the rear end exploded I replaced it now when I put it in drive it goes to 3rd. I shift it manually it drives fine. I’m lost I’ve tried unhooking the battery for a few hours and got nothing. I got it to go to 1st in drive for a split second but then back to 3rd. Any ideas
