tool box

I have a 99' stepside 4x4. I am looking for a tool bax but am having a lot of trouble finding what I need. I am looking for something that is narrow enough to fit the width of the bed, but not so tall that it sits above the overall height of the truck.

has anyone ever found anything like this for their stepside. I would prefer that the box be of diamond plate material.

any suggestions are appreciated.

thanks

You want like a chest that sits in the bed instead of an over-the-rail box?

I would check out UWS. I have had their Blue Series Gullwing over the rail box for 2 years now and I am very satisfied.

Is that box "removable"?

As in like it just has some J hooks or something?

If so I've been looking for a strong, secure, toolbox that seals well and is also easily removable for years now.

I have one of those s**tty ass little plastic Delta "Hopper" ones but that thing hasn't sealed from day one, and is basically just a total joke. It was such a waste of $90

I believe it just sits in the bed. Im not sure but I assume so because my grandparents have a Truck Options Chest (made by UWS) and theirs just sits in there. Im sure you could also secure it to the bed with self tapping screws if you really wanted too. Definatly removable.

I just got a UWS Blue Series Wedge (took me a minute to find it since I didn't know what it was called :jester:). I really like it though. I've got the sportside as well and I already had 6' tube rails so an over-the-rail box was out of the question. Anyway, check it out. It's not removable (unless you don't bolt it down, LOL), but I had no intention of moving it anyway.

Try Tractor Supply Company. They make some really nice ones. As for mounting, I went to HomeDepot and got 4 x 6 inch self taping bolts (with a 1/2 inch head). I pilot a hole in each corner and run through the bed with some lock washers. It has nott moved in my current truck and didnt either in my 2000. For mine (chest type) I put everything small in 3 milk cartons to keep unloading fast and easy. And total removal of the chest is about 10 minutes to ratchet out the bolts.

Hope this helps, Nick

Yea thats the same thing I did with my over the rail.

Do any of you guys know of a manufacturer who makes a chest-style, or even a cross-rail style, that is made outta steel or something other than plastic, and is EASILY removable, meaning you bolt a mount for it to the bed, then it has some means of being removed from the mount, via a lever-lock or a J-hook or something?

I have found plastic ones but those basically suck and are a total waste of money, I would really like to find one that's strong and steel but easily removable like the plastic ones are.

I really can't afford to lose any more of my bed length than I already did by buying a shorbed truck, and it'd be nice to have a fullsize box but to have it be removable hwen I gotta haul something big, heh

The only thing I really can suggest is to fab something yourself. I know exactly what you are talking about but unfortunately I have never heard of them being manufactured like that.

I have a friend that welded a small plate to both the bed and to the box and then padlocked the box in through a hole he drilled in both of the plates.

this is probably your best bet for something removeable. you can choose the exact box you want and then fabricate it to meet your specific needs.

worth a shot I guess...

I have a UWS and it is supposed to come with two J hooks, I went to Lowes and bought two more for a total of four. No drilling required except in the box. I then wrapped tape around the hoo part that touches the rail.

I can remove my box in less than 5 minutes(not including taking everything out to reduce weight).
