Hello all. I have a 2020 Chevy 3500 6.6 gas dump truck. Has a single battery setup. Was having a problem starting. It would click when I turned key. But would eventually start. Put new battery in and was good for about a day. Now have the same problem but will only click when key is turned. All lights, radio, etc all work. Only way i can get it to start is by jumping or putting battery charger on it. Don't have time to take to dealer right now as it is my work truck. Has anyone had a similar thing happen? Any suggestions would be a help.

Sounds like a starter, but it sounds way too new to have a bad starter.  Unless you start it often.

How are your battery terminals?  Did you clean and scrape them and put some protection on them?  One would assume they are still factory.

Are you in the rust belt?

Every time you have to jump it or only after it sits? Sounds like you may have a defective battery, Take it to the parts store and have it tested. Gauges normal when running? If only after it sits there may be a relay stuck draining the battery

Terminals are good. It is used as a lawn care truck. So its started 12-15 times per day 6 -7 months out of the year. I'm in Wisconsin but truck is not driven in the winter.

Gauge is normal when running. Doesn't matter if it sits or was running it needs to be jumped

Is there a chance you had a bad battery and the new one is junk too? It does happen and now days it happens more than ever. Get it load tested.

keep us updated although winter is now upon us in WI so maybe the truck is not going to get used til spring?

Check the connections to the starter. It sounds like maybe there may be corrosion on one of the connections.

Also check the connections between the large battery negative wires and the truck body and engine. I think there have been issues with those negative connections talked about from that period.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will take a look at it this weekend. I have another week or 2 that I need the truck daily. If I can't figure it out I will take to dealer as it's still under warranty.

We just put a starter in a 2021 gas HD, so I'd lean towards a possible starter issue.

Seems premature for a starter! What’s book time for a starter on the 6.6

Jump start usually won't help a bad starter or corroded connection. First things First- CHECK THE BATTERY!!!!

Had a similar issue on one of my vehicles. Replaced the battery, nothing. Though it was the starter because it just clicks, wrong. The shop diagnosed it was the battery cable, the terminal itself was good and clean but they found corrosion and deposits in the cable going into the terminal.

Why did they say that happened and how?

Didn't say how or why. $60 bucks out the door and it's been starting fine.

1.4hrs.  I don't consider it premature with the number of 2014-2018 5.3s we've changed them on (gen 5 engine just like the 6.6 gas), as with the number of 2015-2019 6.0's we've done as well.  Lots, and a good bit only 2-4 years old.
