For some time I have been looking for a little more rumble and sound from my 6.2 so last month I jumped the gun before doing to much research and bought a MBRP muffler delete kit.  After trying to live with this setup for a few weeks, this kit is just too much drone for me with most of my driving being highway. 

 

My question is, is there a performance muffler available that can replace the MBRP muffler delete pipe without too much modification to the existing piping?

If it's too loud, you're too old. I chopped my muffler off the 3rd day I owned my 6.2 Trail Boss. I LOVE it. Magnaflow has a couple options that bolt in in place of the cut off stock muffler.

Your local performance muffler shop should have a few options, go with a name brand and look onljne for reviews(droning) and on here perhaps before you buy.
I spent way more than  100 bucks but alas have zero drone with my Corsa, cold start is a bit harsh for my neighbors but ohh well they love that I am alert and a 2A guy so they forgive me.🤣

Did you cut the flapper out too? I left my flapper in and I don't get any drone on my muffler delete. Driven on multiple trips, even towing a camper and nothing obnoxious.

I cut my flapper out, even though the Magnaflow delete pipe wasn't designed for it. There's only a very specific RPM range that's about 2-300 wide where it makes an odd sound but it only lasts for a second or two when it's shifting or going into lockup. It doesn't bother me at all. Guess the sound of a loud V8 doesn't bother me as much as some people.

The longer the muffler the less drone you’ll have. I have a straight through but 30” long “totally not a Magnaflow” Jones muffler on mine and it has no drone.

Its not that the exhaust is too loud, but its the drone on the highway that gets to me. I am getting to old forsure!

Hey bud, I'm from NL too (Torbay). Made an account just to reply since I JUST went through this last week.

 

Just did the MBRP muffler delete last week. I noticed a TON of drone on highway as well... BUT I found a "fix". Now it's almost silent on highway cruise but deadly if you lay into it. Found it takes 2 things.

 

1) When I cut the muffler, I left the flapper valve in place but locked it open (popped the spring off, turned the valve, put spring back in last groove to keep it open). The whole point of the flapper valve is to lower the exhaust sound/drone at low rpm. I was finding most of my drone was at the 1,500-2,000 rpm range so I figured I'd try undoing the locked open mod. This helped SOME, but not all drone.

 

2) I also noticed that when I got into the throttle heavier, a lot of the drone went away - but after cruising again light throttle it would come back full force. Started playing around with how my throttle input affected it. Came to the conclusion that at the same 1,500-2,000 rpm range the drone was WILDLY different and quieter the more aggressive I was. It also seemed the higher the frequency of the engine noise, the lower the drone. Came to the conclusion from both those tests that something about the DFM dropping cylinders down from 8 made the drone WAY worse. ESPECIALLY if I was light on throttle, then started to go up an incline (almost like when it was trying to use fewer cylinders and the demand was just barely not enough to get all 8 to fire) it was like a trombone next to your head in the truck.

 

I bought a Pulsar LT, deactivated DFM, deactivated stop/start, set throttle to +30%.

 

Dude, honestly NIGHT AND DAY difference. Truck is damn near stock silent at cruise. Drone all but eliminated - sometimes it'll start to sound like it's going to hit that steady drone note (same situation where cruising and starting a slight incline - like it would need to drop a gear but not enough yet to drop down) but it never hits that steady drone sound & barely touching the throttle gets it to drop that gear & any small sign of that drone goes away.

 

Hope that helps. I had the same regret as you after doing it - now I would do my setup a 1000 times again.

@Newfie1980, if you end up going the Pulsar LT route post a follow-up & let me know how it worked out. Curious if this was a one-off fix that just worked well because of my own driving style & habits, or if this would be a generic fix for anyone going the muffler delete route before I recommend to anyone else.

 

But either way, would definitely recommend the Pulsar LT for the throttle alone. Set to +30% (30mph in the settings) is the perfect sweet spot and makes a huge difference.

Do you have a truck with the NPP active exhaust? Just bought a 2024 High Country 6.2 and it has an active exhaust. Trying to figure out what I can do to swap a muffer on.

Drone seems to be dependent on the ears of the beholder, read many posts/forums/treads and it seems 50/50. Some swears they have zero drone where others that have done the same muffler delete can't stand the drone. Keep your muffler to revert back to if it drones.

    • Missing pieces of the Assembly   Detergency vs Solvency   Not the same thing. Detergency is the mechanism that surrounds solid particulates preventing amalgamation. Usually accompanied by a Dispersant whose job it is to keep those encapsulated particles in Suspension. Solvency keeps things that can be dissolved in solution.    Salt is a solid that can be dissolved. Pepper is a solid that cannot be dissolved. A detergent/dispersant is effective on pepper but a solvent is more effective on salt. As long as the solids remain in either state, dissolved or dispersed then they can be be removed with the oil upon change.    How many wranglers does it take to herd cats? Depends on how many cats your herding. How much sponge does it take to soak up water? How much water is there to soak up? Point is most oil blends start with some herding ability and next to zero sponge and recently even fewer wranglers are being sent to do the same job.    So you start with a dozen cowboys and zero cows but at the drive progresses you pick up cows along the way, but not cowboys. At some point you have more cows that the wranglers can handle and some leave the herd. Deposits. And the API has an acceptable number of cows they are willing to let loose. In the ideal world zero is the right number for he rancher but to the butcher....a few lost is fine. This cow is beat to death. Let's move on....   Solvency isn't something oils on the Walmart shelf care about AT ALL. Problem is, you motor does. Fuels driven varnish sticks rings and only a solvent can keep them in check. The bet is that the solids driven portion that plug the expander rings and the oil drain backs and VVT screens and AFM screens will be an issue long before varnish is. Not that it wont be but if they market well enough the consumer can be kept ignorant enough to either believe it is "normal" (A quart in 1 or 2K is normal) OR is kept at bay longer than the first owner is likely to hang on to the unit. Solvency cost money.    Now the OEM's have John Q. Public buffaloed into the belief that the number cows accumulated along the trail is a known and predictable CONSTANT. It isn't. Nor is the rate at which they crossed paths with them. Only the number of wrangles is constant. Or was. Each new generation of oil sees fewer and fewer of them.    So what happens when the number of cowboys is lower (lower TBN) with each seasons trail but the trial is longer (OCI) and the number of cows along that trail continues increase? (Conditions that promote deposits).    For awhile the blenders were on to something. Better bases are harder to degrade (fewer cows) but that was overtaken by a longer trail (OCI) and improved breeding (More cows) while continuing to reduce the cowboy staffing levels (TBN/Aniline #).    Marketing has been successful. We've fired most of the staff, cows breed line bunnies, the trail is ten times longer and we've convinced the boss his ranch is in better shape that it ever was.    That kids is just the cleaning side. The side few pay attention to.
