Figured this was worth sharing. Replaced rear pads/rotors on my 2019 with 70k miles. Far as I know this is the first change. The rear outside rotors looked fine but I was getting some major squeaking. When I disassembled I noticed that the inside pads were completely shot, next to no pad life left and the inside of the rotors were beat. The outside pads had over 50% pad life left, so it seems they wear completely uneven. Also, if you’re going to change pads, be sure to enter brake service mode. I recently did my rear brakes on my 2019 AT4 and also noticed uneven wear. But this was the same case for my fronts that I did last Fall. 
 

You do not require a specific tool for the rear brakes. There are many YouTube videos showing how to put the truck into Service Mode. This will retract the pistons and you can do the brake job like any other brake job without e-brake applications.

That’s what was strange. I watched the videos and I forsure put the truck into brake service mode. I could hear the electronic brake motors retracting for a while but they didn’t retract. It stood in service mode while I swapped the pads. Can’t see what I missed but would be good to know for next time. Thanks.

Our techs have tried this supposed "service mode".  Doesn't work.  Nowhere in GM Service Information does it list ANY alternate procedures other than the use of a scan tool to retract and extend the pistons.

Hey newdude are there any affordable scan tools that are worth a sh*t that dont cost over $2000.00?

I literally just used it to retract mine a month ago. I suggest your techs do a little more research. 
 

I followed the steps in the video on YouTube to put the vehicle into Service Mode and take it out of Service Mode. The (P) with a wrench under it will flash. What do you suggest that means other than Service Mode???

 

Of course GM wants you to come in and pay some ridiculous amount of money to hook up a scanning tool and overpay for a brake job….

Of course not……GM wants to make cash from their service department to make up for lack of sales during Covid. 
 

But the method I used worked perfectly. 
 

MANY people have used the same method with no issues.

Well it appears I've got some egg on my face as the w/o scan tool procedure was not in the manual.  

 

It now is. 

 

Not sure when they added this.  It was not there in the 2019-2021 trucks, under 2022 LTD I see it so I'd imagine they edited this for all the years 2019-2024.

What's sad, is that GM programmed this feature into the trucks from the get-go, yet waited 5 years to tell the public about it, intentionally allowing the consumer to believe the only way to get the brakes done was through the dealership.  

 

Talk about deception.

 Just received my Launch scanner today. It will put the brake system into service mode. I see it will reset pad life also.

 

Amazon has a lightening deal right now for $372.

Any help will do. Started rear brakes and got passenger side off before realizing you had to go into service mode. Never knew anything about it. Yup, rookie I guess. I tried to go into service after I had caliper off. Bunch of lights went off in dash. Complete brake failure, trailer brake error or something along that line. Also said something like top speed 43mph. Never could get those off dash. I ended up finish with new calipers rotors pads on rear. Driver rear was seized up completely. Needless to say. Starting bleeding brakes and got to made with whole situation. Had truck towed into shop and they can’t figure out to unlock rear. Fronts still roll. Any help trying unlock would help. I’m sure I’ll get a nice heathy bill from shop if they ever figure out. Thanks

Doing rear brakes on my 2019 Chevy Silverado lt. I got the caliper off and the rotor and when I put the caliper tool on it to spin and push it in… it has too much resistance. I did the turn the truck on and hold the park brake and the light is on solid now with the wrench any help please!!!

    • How many years have I pointed out every point in that link to the folks here and been avalanched with criticisms and outright hostilities at times? I ran counter to even the great CUSTOMBOSS and Lake Speed Jr and the half dozen experts on YouTube and in the final.....GM, Physics (Stribeck) backs that Grumpy old Bear.    Honestly, I never said a thing engineering hadn't studied silly and laid in concrete during WWII. But I'm old, the information is old and yet, the Laws of Physics are eternal.    Okay there is one exception. I vehemently disagree with their use of the word 'tolerances' when what it meant is "clearance".   The clearance is the distance between two objects. The tolerance is the degree of acceptable variation permitted in that clearance. I.E., piston to bore clearance is 0.004" with a tolerance of +/- .0002" so the clearance is in specification if it lies between 0.0038" and 0.0042". Cutting that 'tolerance in half has ZERO impact on lubrication requirements. Makes for more difficulty in manufacturing.  But a tighter clearance 'MAY'. Depends on finish. Anyway....   It's one of those statements made by people to make themselves look smarter than they are to convince people who are as un-enlighten as they seem to manipulate their behaviors. But hey, the blind leading the blind puts them both in the pit. 
    • Out and about yesterday on a long Saturday drive I passed a lot of Shell stations. My preferred, so I pay attention. Lot's of small town Illinois so not six stations in three blocks like the city.    Everyone of them over a radius of say 100 miles had regular at $4.19 but one which was the one closest to home at $4.15. However Premium pricing varied greatly between 85 cents over regular to $1.50 over. I'm not counting the price of the station with the lowest regular so the reference is the same for the remainder and all within the same brand. However the spread discrepancy holds across all brands.     @txab, any thoughts on that? 
    • What are your thoughts? The Chevy Blazer relaunch was an epic case of 'lunchbag letdown'. Jeep Wranglers and Ford Broncos stick out like a sore thumb.    The AI photos do not look like a 'retro version', but shrunken Tahoes. Get away from the 'futuristic look'. I've seen two concepts. One had rectangular headlight like a Rivian and the other way too big headlights (similar to a previous non-Wrangler SUV) should include dual round headlights like the early version.   If not this would look OK   At least it has GM styling (albeit the K2XX) A lot of the images floating around look like Bronco IIs or the current Bronco. Looking at the Broncos in my area (central Ontario, it seems to be a mix of 2 doors and 4 doors, 'mall rated' to ones that could go offroad.    I'm sure a AT4 and AT4X RPOs could be outfitted similar to a Rubicon if the braintrust understood the whole offroad scene. Crossing my fingers that if it does see the light that the front air dam/bumper doesn't extend below the center line of the tire...
