New Tires

I just purchased a 2020 gmc elevation with 275x60x20 tires and want to upgrade to at least a 35 in tire and keep the same factory wheels. Has anyone else done the same thing? Most truck shops are having me either go with a 285 or install a 6in lift.

To achieve a 35" diameter in a 275mm wide tire you'd need to go with 275/70r20. Tirerack.com did not produce a result when I searched for that size. That might be why other tire shops are trying to convince you to go with a 285mm wide tire. A 285/65r20 equates to 34.6". 285/70r20 = 35.7". Imo, if you wish to do this, and not do a lift, to avoid/minimize rubbing I would go with the 285/65r20. I currently have 285/75r18 on my stock Trail Boss LT and there is a little bit of rubbing at full lock of the steering wheel. 285/75r18 = 34.8", although Tirerack.com says the Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs in that size are actually 35.1". That's what I'm running. Taking a look at things, I plan on installing a 2" leveling kit the week of Thanksgiving and doubt it'll resolve the rubbing issue. I have 1/2" wheel spacers ready to install, but just haven't had the time. I doubt they'll fix the rubbing issue though. I actually suspect they'll make it slightly worse, but I'm still going to try. I did do a mud flap delete as I did initially have rubbing on the mud flaps. That's another area you'll want to take a look at. Bottom line: you don't need a 6" lift for 285mm wide tires, but you'll have a little bit of rubbing if you don't do a lot at all. People will argue that last bit by saying they have tire XYZ and have no rubbing and no lift. They might be right. Perhaps it's all in the actual size of the tire make and model. Nonetheless, for your application is go with the 285/65r20 tire.
