Anyone with experience with these. I don’t carry in my ride, I often think about it. I saw an ad about one that shoots pepper spray and rubber balls. Non deadly but effective. What are the thoughts on this?

Reminds me of people who are surprised that there’s trees in Texas. There’s even snow and gasp Californians.

I think that if you find that the situations you find yourself in makes you wish for something....then get yourself a pistol or don't go.

Generally the situation where you find the application of non-lethal force to be reasonable is also the same for lethal force.  Pulling out a red pepper blaster might have less of a diffusing impact than going weaver ready with your Glock

Trying to apply continuum of force guidelines is risky even if you're trained.

We decided to get her a gun sized to her hand. Then we’re going to take the gun safety course together. We’re not required to get a carry permit anymore but we’re going to anyway. And we’re going to join a club like the NRA, it may be the NRA. We’re also going to get additional insurance to cover us just in case. We figured if we needed to pull a weapon it may as well be lethal. She bought a S&W 9 mil years ago for home protection. It may as well be a cannon. She can’t handle it. With what’s going on at the border just 90 miles away and the sheer numbers. Our concern level is at maximum.

It is sad that anyone has the need to carry a gun for protection from other humans.  Bears and cougars maybe.  I do understand but it is still sad.   The pepper ball gun sounds interesting and I may research these.  The proliferation of desperate mentally ill and/or drug addicted homeless people I feel threatens my safety.  My physical strength is no longer a weapon 😉 if an encounter goes bad.

A pepper gun is like bringing a knife to a gun fight IMO. The gun looks like a gun, so if you pull it the reaction is going to be defensive. And if it's dark worse yet.

If she has trouble with a 9mm, go smaller caliber. Well placed shots are more important. 380?

This might work https://www.smith-wesson.com/product/m-p-bodyguard-380

The majority of gun defense situations happens at short distances. Point and shoot, no time to aim.

We’ve never have felt threatened. The sheer numbers that are coming our way really makes you think. Houston being 40 miles from my area and all you hear about is the increasing crime rate. Getting gun ready and training just makes sense. I don’t like it. We’ve been talking about it for awhile, it’s going to happen.

My wife can handle some full sized 9mm pistols all day very comfortably. Once you get into the subcompact ones (like the SIG P365 or Springfield Hellcat) they get pretty spicy and harder to operate accurately. Going down to .380 might be a good compromise. I have a Glock 42 and it’s small, soft shooting, easy to rack. Basically no recoil with basic range ammo. I would however carry with +P ammo for a little more power.

Also, USCCA is a great resource for training and legal protection. I was a member for a number of years and learned a lot from their videos. I just let it lapse because honestly it’s not cheap, and I’m not likely to shoot much more than an attacking stray dog in this neighborhood. Areas where I feel I might need it for humans I just avoid altogether at this point.
