Now that I've had some time to really digest your comments and read your reply many times as well, here's what a diesel would be put through if I owned one.  I don't idle long at all if hardly ever, I use my truck daily going back and forth to work unloaded 11 miles each way.  A small bit of that is interstate of which is where I stomp on my gasser, I would do the same with a diesel.  My wife and I often use my truck for road trips unloaded because it's so comfortable, we would do the same with a diesel.  It would tow our camper probably 5k miles a year for now until we buy a 5th wheel, then more miles each year.  I've had my gasser for 18 months and have 21k on it, so the mileage isn't really an issue.  I've never gone more than a few days without driving my truck.  So knowing what a diesel would be put through, in my life, do you think it's a bad idea?

As long as you drive it, it should be OK (based on my experience). Just read up as much as you can on diesel emissions issues so you can be 100% on it. There are other things like the fuel injectors have to be swapped at around 150k miles or so - but I never did this so I don't know how difficult it would be. I do know that the diesel engines themselves are built very strong and can last hundreds of thousands of miles without major issues. If DEF deletes were still legal, I would probably still be driving a diesel.

If you don't mind sir I would like your comments too about what I just wrote to kevin74.  Thank you in advance!!

Ha, it only takes me a month to pay attention!  And like a typical government employee I have only doublespeak for ya.

Sounds like you don't need a diesel.  I don't either, but it might be hard to get me to go back because I really like driving it.  Like a 757, vastly overpowered that sure is fun!  Don't have a job, so very minimal on trips less than 30 miles.  Get the groceries in the old truck just to keep it limber.  My use is mainly 165 miles each way to our cabin towing a flatbed with a small tractor on the back along with logs coming home.  Max 10K, no doubt the gasser would do it well.  My 2004 with the first gen 6.0 can do it.  (debatable on the "well" part   lol)  And then we have our camper which is about 35' and 9000 lbs loaded.  Used to tow that with an Excursion which was right at the max I would want to tow with it power wise and you always had to plan the slightest incline.  But that was only 300 hp 1st gen V10.  So certainly your gas truck would be significantly better, though I am sure it will have it's time at 4000 RPM.

As to the diesel engine and never having owned one before I will say is nearly magical how effortlessly it runs with or without a load.  (after you factor in the dead pedal off the line)  It makes towing almost as effortless as without a trailer from a driver fatigue standpoint.  Some of that is the stability of the truck in general, but it drives "normal" with a trailer behind.  I have had no issues at all with the engine or transmission.  (or anything - no warranty claims)   I change oil when the computer tells me to, fuel filter works out to every 3rd oil change.  Don't use any fuel additives, usually use a couple different high volume fuel stations and mostly truck stop DEF out of the pump.

My sample of one truck says they are all perfect!  I do think they are getting a lot more reliable than previous generations.  You may recall how emissions systems completely turned every gas engine into crap for nearly 30 years after 1973.  So maybe it only took 25 years for these engines.  Progress and all.  :)

I've had a '24 for just over a year now. Until Friday, things had been great in regard to reliability. I went in for an oil and fuel filter change and ended up coming home in a loaner vehicle. Somehow, the variable vein actuator broke on the turbo which through a bunch of codes when I started it to come home from the dealer's service center. I have my doubts that it was a coincidence but apparently there is a technical service bulletin covering this (I've been searching but haven't found it yet).

As for how it tows (I have a 40' Cedar Creek weighing in around 17k pounds), I've been quite happy. Power has been quite good with the exception of torque management from a stop (extremely aggressive in 1st gear). Once it hits about 1600rpm the power comes on all at once (again, only 1st gear from a stop though). Drivability in every other situation has been fantastic.

Mileage towing my trailer is 8-9mpg on the highway around 65mph. Not sure how the other user pulled off  23mpg around town as I can only muster 22mpg on the highway under 70mph if I'm focusing on driving with mileage in mind. Around town, we're closer to 12mpg.

Overall, I absolutely love the truck and I would have a hard time parting with it. It's comfortable, I like the creature comforts, and it does its job. If you have fulltime plans in your future, there is no reason to buy a gas engine.

I have a 2024 2500 Duramax Custom and love it. I've had it now for 6 months and haven't had any issues at all.  I use it for a daily driver and pull some trailers on occasion. I like the Custom package myself. I've set it up the way I want it with LED bulbs, a Diamondback bed cover, the step bars I wanted, a pair of Banks I-dash's and I'm waiting on a Pedal Monster to arrive. Even with the upgrades I still haven't reached the cost of the next model up and the truck is how I want it. I never use all the extras they put on the LT and up anyways.
