Hi everyone. Heading home last Thursday from running some errands my 2020 L8T went into limp mode and then died while cruising 70mph.

As I waited for a flatbed I attempted some starts, which resulted in crank crank Frank no start.

Codes showing immediately at limp mode were p0089, p0304 and p228c. I'm hoping it's "just" the hpfp, but any input is appreciated and welcome. This is based on the p0089 and p228c faults, combined with the no start condition but I'm only guesstimating here.

Current shop status is that every light on the dash is now lit up and they were able to start it but it misfired badly. Hope to have a final diagnosis later today.

Multiple stuck injectors and a failed high pressure fuel pump is the final verdict.

I'm just astonished that those things could all fail spectacularly at once. Would have guessed one or the other.

Yeah that does seem odd. How many miles on your truck?

92k and some change on the clock.

Bought it at 89k from a known reputable dealer. Needed something reliable with a crew cab and the normal size box, and did not want to break the bank. Hence buying a pre-owned unit with higher miles.

My favorite and most reliable truck I ever owned was my 2010 1500 with 6.2 I bought it with 120k on the clock in 2013 which is very high for its age. Drove it until 2019 and 265k miles without a single hiccup.

I suppose that makes sense, hadn't considered it that way.

We are replacing all 8 injectors anyway, and plugs since it's coming due soon. Should be all taken care of this week. I hate paying shop prices... But at this stage in my life I guess I can afford it and I probably would not have caught the failed injectors until after it was all back together. I did guesstimate the hpfp correctly anyway so that was worth a grin.

My sons 5.3 went at about the same miles. Had to drop the tank also and replace the pump in the tank as well as clean it and flush all the lines. One of the lines at the HPFP is one time use and must also be replaced.

When the HPFP goes it spreads debris through the system much like when a CP4 grenades.

Gas are returnless fuel system.  Diesel are still a return system which is why the entire fuel system on a diesel ends up with metal.

Only place for the metal to go on a currnet gas truck is into the high pressure lines and the injectors.

It was a 2014. I know he pulled the tank and pump also. Thanks for clarifying that.

Gotcha.  GM went returnless back in 2004 on trucks so I should have clarified that lol.

Well here's an update for anyone interested, picked up truck Thursday, 40 miles home. Drove it into town to gas up Friday morning, then headed out Saturday morning for a 250 mile road trip with a truck full of people. Stopped for lunch at mile 200, ate, hit the road. 55mpg cruising, same exact failure.

Towed back to the shop that fixed it (luckily, passenger had AAA with 200 miles range).

They offered a free loaner which I declined as I have a car too. They dissected it first thing Monday morning and said the new hpfp they installed had an internal fault in the regulator, causing it to misbehave. Another new hpfp in and picking up again tomorrow.

I've lost so much confidence in my "road trip" rig at this point... Idk what to even do though besides keep driving it since this work is all under full warranty for 2 yrs/ 24k miles. My only solace at this point is the shop in question has committed to ensuring it stays on the road under their warranty.

    • Looking for advice from this group. Took my flawless 2020 6.2 TB to an unnamed shop for routine rear brakes and oil change. Tech forgot to put oil back in after the full service and needles to say, destroyed my engine.  It’s all on their shop video so they are responsible.   I had my Chevy dealer do the analysis and they confirmed its compromised and said engine replacement. The manager said they only get GM reman engines from GM with full 3 yr warranty and the one they would put in is not same as what’s they are swapping out on 21-25 for recall.    I am looking for advice why that would be a different engine because obviously I had the good 6.2 year and replacing it has my concerns with that recall for 21-15   Also what’s the pros and cons of accepting the engine swap vs telling the shop that bricked the truck to pay up so I buy a new truck. I’m concerned about stigma resale eventually if I just decide to get rid of it after the swap or other issues showing up after the swap out.
    • Just looked up my records.  I've never gone over 5000 miles between oil changes.  At 46K miles, I have 10 oil changes.  I hope that will help.  I also installed the disabler last year.  I've still had a few times when it didn't seem to engage (which I can tell because the start stop feature kicks in), but for the most part, I think it's working.  For some reason, GM did not include the number of cylinders running in the information screen like I had on other models.  In my Cadillac, it shows me when it's running on 4 cylinders on the fuel milage screen.  I can't find that on my '21 Denali.
    • you might read through the info on gmupfitter.com for your truck, to find a good power source.
    • Melling I believe is/was the OEM on the lifters who explored this problem some years ago. The white paper they generated on the topic indicated two items of note when I read it. 1.) They only fail on the switch. Prevent the switch, prevent the failure. 2.) The majority fail due to deposits messing up the timing of that switch. Anyway that's what I got from it.    Mine have always been active, 195K+ now, and my oil maintenance is surgically clean.    Of course this assumes good parts. That is no heat treat issue or machining flaws. I get comfortable that these issues are in the rearview mirror by about 30K. IMHO naturally.
    • Yes, the key seems to be with the half tons that if it has the Z71, then it definitely has the two speed. What got me was that the two speed AND the lower geared towing package option could not be chosen together the last few years unless it was mated up to the 6.2. Want the 3.0 duramax and 3.73 tow gears ... nope, can't get the two speed transfer case ( neighbor son realized that after he had bought his used 3.0 half ton .. where the frick is the low range ? ! ).    I am still unsure which truck series, the half ton or the HD truck that the original poster is referring to for sure other than yes his question is in the HD section of this forum but that doesn't guarantee the question got asked in the right section.
