How Long Do Brakes last

i have a 99 silverado new body style ext cab z71 was woundering how many miles i can expect out of them vehicle has 89,600 miles on it bought it used

Rear pads/rotors at 38 or 39k. The fronts were just done at 59k...though they probably had a little life left. Gotta love salt and our fine NE Ohio roads.

i got 82k out of my rear pads, still on the original fronts @ 93k. i drive in a lot of stop and go traffic too, so I would imagine that I would run thru pads a little quicker.

I'm heavy on my brakes.

 

My OBS trucks, I had to replace front pads by 30K easy.

 

My 2000 GMC went 85K before I had to replace the pads. Great improvements on longevity and how easy the pads are to change.

Depends on how you drive. I have 33,000 miles on my initial set, and they still look new. I do 80 miles/day on the highway, so that has a lot to do with it.

Went 90k on the front pads and rotors and 110k on the rear.

 

With milage like this it was easy to justify replacing them with AC Delco.

I agree - I went with the best available bendix pads and have a squealing problem.

 

I have heard raybestos is good too.

did the rear at 80k, the rotors were all rusted and the pads were about 25-30% left. The front i have not replaced yet, but i did turn the front rotors because they were all rusty to but the pads are at 75-80% left, just make sure you service both and you should be OK.

I was forced to replace the back pads at 65,000. On one of them the material ripped of the pad, i guess all that powerbraking, just to much chevy power. Well at 65,000 they had over half of the material left, im sure they could have gone to over 150,000. The fronts all almost exactly the same, i would think they would wear a little more. Plus ive notice i never get brake dust, much better than my friends ford, his stock pads suck. I love these pads. To anyone who wants to know, i got some wagner thermoquiets to replace them, and i love them too, they seem just like stock.

If you read the Helm shop manual, you will discover that Ohio is part of the "rust belt" and more frequent disk brake servicing is required. Otherwise your caliper could stick and wear out the brake pucks.

 

At least once a year, you're supposed to pull the brake caliper and remove the caliper slide pins. If they're rusted and stuck in, you have a problem.

 

If you can get them out, GM cautions you can't clean heavily corroded caliper slide pins, but must replace them.

 

I also live in an area with heavy winter road salt application. Here is what I do: twice a year (Fall and Spring) I jack up the truck outside and take the wheels off. On safety stands, I then use water to rinse off the rotors and calipers good. Especially in Spring, you want all that salt off pronto.

 

Then use brake parts cleaner to clean them, this also assists in speeding the drying time of the brake assembly. I then take my calipers off and pull out the caliper slide pins.

 

You can carefully use a piece of heavy wire to suspend the caliper, you sure don't want the caliper to dangle from the brake hose. That's asking for trouble.

 

I clean the caliper slide pins in a parts washer and inspect them for corrosion, wear, etc. I then lube the caliper slide pin before putting everything back together.

 

I've had the best luck with LocTite Nickle Grade Anti Seize, and this is a product I use all the time in my shop to prevent rusting/seizing of fasteners. The recommended product just for disk brakes is Kleen Flo Ezy Slide, which is a silicone product.

 

Both are available at industrial and specialty supply houses.

 

My rear brakes were half worn at 62,000km / 37,000mi. The GM dealer wanted $50 for the set of rear axle pucks, so I thought that was a good price and replaced my rear pucks. My front pucks are still in pretty good shape, may have to change them next year.

 

Note: if you have problems with the front rotors rusting, GM does have a TSB that recommends a higher friction front puck. This puck is factory-installed on +2003 and fits all +1999 NBS trucks.

Any thoughts on why they can't be cleaned?

I polished mine with a buffing wheel, and made sure I had a nice slip fit. Then I loaded them up with never seize before installing.

Maybe they are worried about the coating? (I think it's nickle)

The lube should act as a coating?

It's been 6 months, so I plan to inspect them. The salt is real bad here, in Western New York.

    • "Teardown" is complete. Head surfaces are clean and ready, new intake is prepped and ready. Coolant drained and water pump is removed, radiator is removed, new hoses and pump are ready.   The replacement intake is also from a '95 (with I think 260k, the odometer said). Noticeably less pitting where it covers the rear coolant passages. I'm not sure if that's a tribute to more frequent use, more frequent coolant changes/upkeep, or if the intake was machined at some point. But it appears I found a good one.   My coolant hoses were original, and the lower hose still retained the factory spring inside. It's not really rusty, but it's got deposits all over it. Unsure if I should re-install it (will thoroughly clean it first). Someone said hose technology has gotten better since 1995 (has it?) and I don't need the spring. I think modern EPDM is what made those hoses last from 1995-2026, so it's a question of how much suction can the water pump really pull, and will it collapse the hose without a spring?   I'm stopped and waiting for parts, however.   When I first brought the truck home, the fan was intermittently hitting the radiator shroud. I could see someone had monkeyed with the shroud (put a bunch of cardboard as a spacer between the upper/lower shroud halves. Someone said the motor mounts have likely failed and the engine has sagged. I wasn't sure I believed that. The engine is really solid in its mounts: To remove the old intake I *just* nearly permanently welded to the heads with freshly cured RTV and gasket snot two weeks ago, I literally had to use the arms on my lift and a chain with a bolt attached to the intake to pull it loose. It almost picked the front of the truck off the ground before ....scuuuuuuuuuuup.... I could actually hear the gaskets tearing and it broke loose and the whole truck settled back down. Motor barely moved.   SO, those parts I'm waiting on... The lower radiator mounts/bushings had completely failed. The radiator needs to be insulated from the rad support, and the bushings help the rad stand at the correct height. The plastic "baffle" was also destroyed at some point. Someone had attached the shroud to it incorrectly, overlapping a joint that should have been underlapped, creating another suspect issue potentially causing things to hit the fan. Broken tabs, side is busted off, and it's perma-formed/bent where it was jimmied incorrectly.   The baffle? Unobtainum. Long since discontinued from GM, of course. Aftermarket/capa/chinese? Also unobtanium. In GM's infinite wisdom, it appears there are at least two different variations whether the Blazer is 2 or 4 door, and I can't yet tell if they shared the same part with the S-pickups. Plan B, if I can't find a viable used one, will be to create a bracket to re-assemble the critical joint I need to seal a gap with the shroud. But that will bug me, it won't be...perfect.   The water pump bolts appear to have been installed with...plumber's putty. I guess, sure, if it works...? I've found a few "backyard fixes" like that. Someone's been here before....   If I can't find someone to jam bamboo under my fingernails to fill my free time this week I think I'll install the driver's power window motor and replace the rear door speaker that's inop. I've got a genuine GM "9.5" ohm working replacement. Why GM used a non-standard resistance....nevermind. Of course they did, you can get more sound from a cheap factory amp that way.   And the saga goes on...

    • I started my install this weekend. Everything was pretty straight forward but I ran into one issue with running power through the firewall. The nipple grommet on my High Country already has a small harness running through it - has anyone else ran into this issue? And on the engine bay side, does the wire basically just penetrate the factory wiring boot? I did this on my '22 Trail Boss and it seems much easier but thats been a few years. My other thought would be possibly drilling a new hole adding a rubber grommet just to the lower left of the factory hole. Thoughts?   Has anyone used a T-harness off the Bose amp and obtained power from there? It seems a little odd that such a small amp needs 3 power leads

I buy all teh filters for  our three vehicles once or twice a year. Have always run NAPA Gold on everything I own....I buy it thru my Son's account for his business-which he has a Heavy Equipment repair shop-one reason he uses NAPA so much-they have such a full line of coverage for just about anything/anywhere- He gets s  good discount because of volume bought.
