Currently have a 99 Z71 with about 60k. It's in excellent shape with no problems- I don't NEED to get rid of it. It is paid off. My parents neighbors are looking to get rid of their F150, and with the autoshow in town this coming weekend/next week, I've gotten tempted. I figure the rates are low and rebates high. My truck also still has a good deal of value left, so do something while the getting is good...if I can swing payments(bought the house in October by myself- no so).

 

So, tonight I drove a 2500HD crew 6.0. I liked it. I'd like to upgrade to a crew if I do something, just not sure whether or not to go HD or not. Apparently Chevy makes the 1500HD, but it is badged as a 1500...and the 7000 GVW lower on the sticker. They had one of those at the dealer as well...Z71 package with the 7000GVW vs. the 6400(I think) like my 99.

 

My considerations are possibly getting the plow prep for future use, and to have more capability if I need it down the road, as any new truck would be a keeper. The Z71 does just fine now...have my uncle's small Wells Cargo single axle trailer, and it pulled it once with no problems. I'm just debating the HD vs. non issue.

 

Also, any new buyers, what type of deals did you get. Thanks for any suggestions

The 1500HD is now badged as the 2500 which has an 8600lb GVW,the 2500HD has a 9200lb GVW.Sounds like a 1500 crew would fit your needs perfectly.

I too had the same dilemma and finally went with the 2500LD. I didn't need the added towing capability of a HD but didn't want to be caught short with a 1500 should I have the need to tow something substantial. Plus I didn't care for the "stiffer" ride of the 2500HD (IMO) and found the 2500LD to be a great compromise. I love this truck and it's doing the job just fine.

I just made the switch in Dec to a HD from a 1500 LD ex cab with the 4.8.

There are only two objectionable things. 1 stiff ride, but it's a truck and I can live with that, and 2, Gas mileage went from 14.7 daily to 11 daily. Still love the truck though and do not regret the change. If I choose to keep it, it's all the truck I should ever need as the payload is near that of a 3500 srw or so I have been told. Lets hope we don't see much over 2 bucks a gallon though

Its not actually badged as a 2500LD the badging on my truck says 2500; most people destinguish it from the 2500 HD by saying its a 2500 LD. You are right the truck is a true 3/4 ton 5500 unladen weight GVW of 7000.

I thought it was just the way people where identifying the 1500HD, 2500 and the 2500Hd. But you are right I have never seen a 2500 LD. A 1500HD is a 2500...

I bought mine from Autobytel.com and pretty much stole it (see my signature for truck details). I never even had to go to the dealership except to sign the paper and pick up the truck (that they delivered to me from PA.). i ended up after tax and tags paying about $30,850. They were giving some insane rebates at the time as well as the 1.5% financing. Anyway, i love the 2500HD, i will never go back to a LD because of the height and power advantage i have now. The ride may be a little stiffer, but its a very small sacrifice. I look at it this way.......you can always tow something lighter, or use less power if you have to, but if you dont have the power available you cant tow a heavier load. If the difference in price is a few hundred bucks or even a thousand or two, how much is that gonna cost you a month? Maybe another $30 a month? Its worth it to me. I spend $30 a month in soda's at the corner store.

The 1500HD and 2500 is 8600 GVW and the new 1500 CC is 7000 GVW

the weight class sticker from PA is the 5500 -7000 the factory GVW is 8600 cause the truck loaded with accessories is closer to 5800. I have a payload of 3000 pounds but its not a 1 1/2 ton truck, if this was the case a 1500 iwould be a 3/4 ton and a s-10 would be 1/2 ton. The states DOT would like to use the manufactures weight slips because everyone would fall into commercial weight classes.

I weighed my 1500HD with only me in the cab and a full tank 6540LBS. So if I use the numbers you have 7000LBS that gives me a 460lbs payload?? However if you use the 8600LBS that GM lists it would give me 2060LBS take out for a few more passengers after all it is a crewcab aprox -560LBS gives me 1500LBS walla 3/4 ton.

Well someone tossed a monkey into my equation. According to my GMC literature, you can't get the snow plow prep on a 2500 crew(non HD)...however the Chevy only prohibits the plow prep on the 1500 LT. I'd probably be leaning towards the GMC, as the neighbors prefer the look and dealer, and I figure we'll get the best deal if we walk in and trade in 2 trucks for 2 new ones.

 

Drove the Chevy 1500 Z71 Crew this afternoon...17" wheels, dual auto climate, radio controls, etc...not too bad.

 

Guys with the 2500's...hd and not, you were able to get the bucket seats correct? The dealers we went to today didn't have much in the way of options on their trucks.

yes, 8 way power leather bucket seats, center console, etc...etc...

Personally, when people are considering both, I always recommend the HD. Most of this probably comes from my personal feelings that if you ever think you might need it, then get it. I haul alot, so I needed the HD, but even if I just used it for driving around, I would still want the HD. I like the looks and feel of the bigger rig, I like my crew cab, and I like my D/A. I would recommend the 2500HD for you too.
