I I have a 2005 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD four-wheel-drive 6.0 gas engine automatic the engine has 70,000 miles and the trans is rebuilt. The truck has rust and I’ve given up. The truck has a knock sensor code and some other crap codes.

MY QUESTION IS, do 01 02 03 HAVE LESS RESTRICTIONS ON THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT EMISSIONS , KNOCK SENSOR AND ALL THAT CRAP? IF I SEAP MY 05 ENGNE TO AN 03 WILL THERE BE AN ISSUE WITH  CODES.

The 05 seems to  be throwing a code constantly. I have an 04 and an oh one that has no problems and passes New Jersey inspection without issue.

Thank you

The 2000-2002 trucks run a P01 controller, that in it self has different emissions standards because every year or every couple years the emissions standards did change. Also those years were drive by cable throttle bodies compared to 2003-2007's that changed to drive by wire throttle control.

The 2003+ trucks run a P59 computer, which really was just a change to drive by wire. The engine themselves stayed the same and mostly all of the controls of the engine stayed exactly the same besides how the trucks runs with drive by wire.

The way each of these computers and model year trucks detect problems with certain emissions related codes or say knock sensor codes, that all stayed the same. No year is really more or less sensitive to self reporting of a problem. All of those LQ4 engines can suffer from the same problems. Knock sensor codes are extremely common to the LS engine, sensors go bad, water and moisture always get trapped in the rear knock sensor hole. The harness always goes bad and needs replacing.

In your case, if you are just pulling the engine from the 2005 and putting it in a 2003 chassis, the truck and computer are not going to know any different. Just clean up the engine prior to install. Install new OEM knock sensors, install a new OEM harness and fix anything else you think needs done before putting that engine in the 2003 truck.

thank you.

so if i switched to an 02 or 01 is the same type of sensors and codes and emissions? im trying to simplify the state inspection process

Yeah, all of the sensors and emissions stuff is pretty much exactly the same. You could install a 2006 engine in a 2001 truck, the accessories and the fuel system/intake would all bolt on the same way.

Your brothers truck might just be lucky, many vehicles can go a very long time with never throwing an error code.

as far as the 99 being a different generation with a more limited computer. thats what i want to know.

when and what exact years did they become more advanced.

99 through?

and then i read that 04 changed in 05 with knock sensors and stuff.

also

some of these trucks change mid year?

thanks

You could get both a GMT-400 and GMT-800 in 1999 model year, there were plenty of 6.0/4L80e trucks built that year. Those early engines also used iron heads on some engines and switched to aluminum in later 1999 and 2000.

2004 and 2005 should be all the same. The LQ4 didn't change and the knock sensors and computers are exactly same between those 2 years.

I thought the gmt800 2500's didn't show up until the next year (unless there were some 2500LD in '99)?

Non HD 2500s came in 1999 along with the 1500s.  These were the 8600 GVWR with the semi float 9.5" 14 bolt.

GM produced GMT-400 and GMT-800 at the same time briefly however as well.

1999 had GMT-400 1/2 ton "Classic", the 2500, 3500 and C3500 HD were still in production as well.  1999 also had GMT-800 1/2 ton (the all new one), and had 3/4 ton 8600 GVWR in the new style as well.  These were pre-HD as they were still working on those and using the GMT-400 to fill that higher GVWR gap.

2000 the GMT-400 was in its "Classic" phase for 2500/3500 trucks as 2001 model year brought the GMT-800 HD trucks 9200 GVWR and up.

2002 was the last year for the old GMT-400 C3500 HD trucks.  The final couple years of that got the new Vortec 8100 as well but never got the Allison like the 01-07 (classic) GMT-800 HD got with the 8.1.

A friend of mine bought a new 2002 3500HD cab and chassis.  This was a GMT400 series truck with the I-beam front axle and 5/10 stud wheels, and it had an 8.1L with the 4L80E transmission.  Great truck, he still has it!

Interesting that the last GMT400 cab trucks were actually 2008's.  In Mexico, the GMT530 Kodiak stayed in production until 2008.
