Android 12 update ?- Still stuck on Android 10

I have a 2024 SLT, purchased new in January of 2024. It had Android 10 upon delivery and later on in 2024 GM started rolling out the Android 12 update. I brought it in for a software update notice later on in 2024 and some sort of update was applied, but not the Android update.

I've checked several times for OTA updates over the last year but nothing has popped up regarding an Android version upgrade. I did get the mandatory SW update that added cabin ventillation or something similar, but not Android update.

So the question is, how can I get the head unit upgraded? Can I take it to the dealer and simply request they update it, or will they only apply software updates if there's an issue reported?

I am in the same boat, my '22 (refresh) is still sitting on Android 10 and I think for my next oil change (complimentary from the dealer), I'm going to request the TSB for the upgrade the 12. I have had random (very sporadic) audio drop outs and supposedly that's something the upgrade affects. I had it in for other updates and service a few months ago and I assumed (poorly) that they would have done this one as well.

25-NA-121 is the latest update TSB. I'd take it in and say you've got one or a couple of the issues listed in here and if you are still under bumper to bumper it can be updated under warranty.

Y177 Most Notable Improvements:

Audio:

Additional improvements to prevent short cuts in audio especially at start up.
Complete loss of audio improvements.
When switching radio sources with the steering wheel switch, the display may be blank, but audio is still present.
The song skip button may be inoperable during a key cycle.

Apps:

Unable to launch Spotify.

Display:

The side card screen may show the maps loading, or if on the audio page it may be blank after switching to a new user profile.
Favorites bar may no longer be present.
After a regular radio boot up, you may see loading audio on the screen and there will be no audio present.

OnStar:

Device registration failing.

Trailering:

General stability improvements in the trailing app.

Phone:

Echo can be heard on the receiving side of a phone call.
Bluetooth connection improvements.
Bluetooth may disconnect and then reconnect when receiving a new message while creating a new profile.

Stability:

Customer may see a return to dealer screen right at startup or after the splash screen animation.
An over the air update may not process and may get stuck on the acknowledgement screen.
Blank or blue screen may be present after a vehicle update has failed.
After update is successful, there is no prompt after the radio restarts.
Additional robustness to prevent black/blank screens.
The settings app may crash when hitting back button in the Text-to-Speech output page.

SXM:

When switching to SXM there will be no audio until you select another SXM station.

USB hubs:

Center counsel USB hub may be inoperable.

I have a 2023 Silverado refresh, also on Android 10. Had one OTA update in late 2023 and nothing since. Earlier this year they updated the communication gateway s/w when I was in for an oil change. Still no OTA updates. I had been paying for the connected service subscription and using the onboard apps.

A few months ago I cancelled the subscription and started using CarPlay. Since then I have had issues where it does not recognize the phone as a CarPlay device until I disconnect/re-connect. The second issue that emerged was the blower fan speed. It's on high when I first start up then drops down to a low setting like when you have an incoming call. Will not increase no matter what you set the temp to. I have to hit the manual fan speed button then put it back to auto or hit the voice command button on the steering wheel then mute button to get the fan to adjust speed automatically again. Seems like its induced by using CarPlay as an audio source?

Is this addressed by the TSB and upgrade to Android 12 and is that available to all years of the refresh or are there different h/w versions needed to enable the upgrade? Thanks for any advice on this.

look up 24-NA-261 GM service bulletin. That one is for 2024 models and will update to android 12. I had mine done at dealer. Free under warranty. (2024 silverado 1500 LT)

I read the same. 24-NA-261 is for "Full Size Trucks".

25-NA-121 is for "2025 Full Size Trucks and 2022-2024 SUVs".

I had 24-NA-261 applied to my truck yesterday under my CPO warranty. So far, it seems to be working much better. The biggest issue that appears to be fixed is the GPS accuracy - whether with built-in google maps or CarPlay (apple or google maps), my location would jump around and/or delay in updating. That seems to be fixed with the minimal driving so far. Best part was, all my custom settings were held in-place so I didn't need to re-configure everything.

I haven't used much of the audio since the update so I can't say for sure that the issue is resolved as well but I'm cautiously optimistic.

Two steps forward, one step back. After a couple of weeks of using the new software version installed as part of 24-NA-261, I have come across one bug that's quite annoying. Other than this one thing, all of my other issues are resolved.

The equalizer settings are not always "remembered" and applied when I start up the truck. I have not been able to find a common cause as far as timing or state of the vehicle before starting up - ie, it doesn't only happen after the truck has been shut down for a certain amount of time, it's very random.

Basically, when the truck starts up, sometimes the audio is "flat" - none of my equalizer settings are applied. If I go into the screen to change them, the sliders are all in the correct position but the audio is still flat. If I tap one of the arrows for bass/mid/treble, the audio jumps up to the correct settings.

I did a full system reset thinking that maybe something didn't carry over with the update, reconfigured all my preferences and the issue persists.

25-NA-121 is correct. Which is why I referenced it in my first reply to this thread. 24-NA-261 is for an older software Y175. Y177 is the newest and is what's discussed in 25-NA-121. The linked to NHTSA TSB that pops up is an older version of the TSB from February 2025.

Everything else is "remembered" correctly. Radio presets and such are still there (though, I only use CarPlay, the stations on FM that I have saved are still showing. The equalizer screen shows the correct settings (I have bass all the way up, as well as treble, and mid about 2/3 of the way up). These settings are carried over from start to start, however, the actual sound coming out is "flat" until I tap one of the arrows on the equalizer screen, then the audio jumps to it's correct settings. I wish I could narrow it down more to a "truck hasn't run in x minutes or more" but it seems to happen randomly regardless of how long the system was off... it might be fine overnight one day and then not the next. It might be bad after a quick run into the store one day, then not the next time. So it's happening on short and long(er) cycles, randomly.

Interestingly enough, my truck's infotainment and instrument cluster stopped turning off in the last few days when I exited the vehicle. Normally, after powering the engine off, things remain on until you open the driver's door, but this stopped working normally a couple of days ago. I called onstar and told them I was still on Android 10 and asked if they could push an update. They said they were incapable of doing so and I'd have to take it to the dealer. The next morning, after I arrived at my destination, the truck advertised an update with no details. It's the first one I've gotten in at least 6 months. I accepted and walked away, thinking it was something minor. To my surprise, when I came back later, the truck now had Android 12. It also powered off properly a few times yesterday. Hopefully that saved me a trip to the dealer.

I have a 24 GMC Sierra SLT that I bought new off of the lot Dec 2023. As of today, it has never received any OTA updates. I have taken it to the selling dealer to have them check for updates and they did install the update for the gateway issue.

Today I took it to another dealer to see if they could figure out why no updates. The did update the ECM & BCM, but nothing for the infotainment center.

While I was waiting for them to work some magic, I ran across this thread. My infotainment head has Android 10 (Feb 23) on it and the software version is Y169.3.2. The infotainment head build code is IOK.

It looks like this update (25 NA-121) may be able to be applied to my infotainment head and "maybe" enable it to receive OTA updates? Do you guys agree or is it wishful thinking on my part?
