NAV and 6 disk changer in a Silverado

Recommended Posts

hope I can get some help here. I have removed the upper bezel to start the install of the 6 disc. I test fit the cd changer for length in the dash and it is 2-3 inches too long! Am I wrong when assuming the one modifications that needed to be made to the dash where to the bezel itself? When the bezel is removed and you look into the dash hole where the body of the changer would lie there is a large plastic drop with a hole in it. I assumed that the white peg on the back of the changer would fit in there, however when I try the face of the changer sticks out over the first cup holder.

My questions are these:

can anyone tell me the front to back length of their changer so that I can compare it to mine. I am trying to figure out if I have a different molding in my dash or simply the wrong changer or is cutting inside the dash and the bezel all a part of getting this to work?

thanks for any help, measurements, ideas etc....

You'll need to trim those pieces, by trim I mean cut the pocket out of the bezel and cut out that piece up in the dash that drops down and has a hole in it. You'll also want to clean up the bezel once you cut out the pocket, I found that a cordless dremel tool works well. My neighbor came outside and saw me with a coardless Milwaulkee ZawZaw cutting out that piece and almost sh*t his pants, he thought I'd lost my mind hacking up a less than 6 month old $34,000 truck. Mine looks and works great, soon I'll do the NAV mod also.

LMAO

yeah, the old lady just shook her head when she saw me tearing that piece out. She said, "why didnt you buy one with a NAV and CD changer originaly"? I didnt bother trying to explain... :chevy:

Who, GMparts.com or Recommended Dealer (anyone got any connections) has the best price / flat discount on a 7531?

And has anyone had the opportunity to operate both the "old" and touch screen units, and is the latest generation / touch unit really the best one (lux system)?

Thanks

TNR: Fingerprints, bigger screen and easy selection/DATA entry.

INR: No fingerprints (well, ideally), smaller screen, klutzy joystick entry.

Guess that settles that.........

Thanks Sperry!

10377531 - is this the 04/05 model TNR - LUX model?

Anyone have or familiar with JP Customs $2k package? (I like that they apparently stand behind their stuff)

SPECMO sells the 7531 for $1670.23

Found it for $1450.00 from an ebay vendor

Now to find a new one at a decent discount........anyone got any "connections" or leads?

Thanks

Yep! the 287 is the NON-Lux and the `531 is the Lux unit.

Are you looking for an amp now? or is your ride a GM Lux model/Y91?

Don't forget to connect your VSS to the cluster..

Sperry, I'm lux'ed up (05 YXL Denali got Y91 and "spacious" and other "equalizer" settings on my existing radio). So I shouldn't have the amp problem. Looks like I will go with Jasons "package" deal and be done with it!

Are there 1 or 2 different GPS antennas available?

Differences?

Got a reply from a GM dealer that offers 10% over his cost and he said he can't get the radio from GM, it can only be bought through Delphi, which I found strange since it shows up at GM parts direct .com.

Thanks for the help and info!

If I remember, it's just an upgraded or replacement P/N on the original antenna.

My guess is dealer's in some areas go by contract obligations that GM sets up with the service depot's.

That's true in SoCal. However, all your dealer has to do is get a price from that service depot.

Model Electronics (East Coast), Specmo (MI) and AER (SoCal) I believe will sell to you but I don't know for how much... Not my thing...

Sperry,

From the Avalanche forum:

"Remember, you will need to connect a wire from your HU, over to the cluster for the VSS signal. It's not really hard and it will operate a bit jerky without it.

It MAY already be there in an 05 but they harness it in. Check for DTC (codes) that set after the theftlock is cleared. The HU will send one if there's no VSS connection however it may not be immediate. So, arrange it with the tech to have him drive it around for 3 miles/4 Km or more, then check for a DTC."

Would you please elaborate in detail (pics?) on this additional VSS hook-up (locating the wire, etc)?

I take it VSS has something to do with vehicle speed?

Any tricks or site you can refer to that have pics, tips etc on getting the trim off without breaking anything and have the entire install detailed out?

Thanks,

This site won't permit a pic upload, and I don't have one remotely stored that you can access.

Find A4 of the cluster (Dark Green with a white tracer) and tap that wire. Run your wire over to the rear of the HU, and tap onto terminal "E" of connector 2. (The smaller one of the two.)

If there's no terminal to tap onto (HU), you will need to find one! This isn't absolutely confirmed, but I believe it's this: GM #12020757 for 20-18 GA

If you have an aux adapter there, sometimes there is a wire to tap.

What is GM #12020757 for 20-18 GA?

What are the consequences of not doing this?

Thanks

So where did you order from? You're ordering the non-lux TNR, correct? I am looking at this also. I'm in the used car business, and the Chevy dealer I buy all of my GM parts from also says it's not available. I also have an authorized Delco dealer who does some radio repair for me that I've done business with for 25 years and he says, so far, he can't get it either.

Edit: Re-read your post and see you have the Y91 (luxury) option. Still interested in where you purchased this unit.

Thanks, Steve

Steve,

I am ordering from Jason over at JP Customs (www.jpcustoms.com).

He has BOTH lux and NON lux complete kits. Jason is very knowlegeable, can you say warranty!, BRAND NEW, ALL the requisite parts and pieces, can you say operators manual, all needed instructions etc. NO un-locking for your VIN etc. Jason is a member and supporter of several of the "truck" boards" too.

He may be high, (cheapest I found a BRAND NEW radio only was $1400 list is 1670.23) but the support he provides and getting everything you need in one package is worth it to ME personally.

Good luck!

What are the consequences of not doing this VSS hookup?

Lastly (for now anyway LOL!) has anyone gone with that PAC adapter / ribbon cable job to use the TNR as monitor for a back-up cam? (is there a separate thread for this install / conversion anywhere?)

Thanks
