NAV and 6 disk changer in a Silverado

Hi Everyone. I came across this forum tonight, and it has a lot of good information. Thanks. Here's my situation. (Let me preface by saying I have an '03 Tahoe Z71, non-lux amp.

 

I purchased the "non-touchscreen" nav radio from a reputable ebayer who stated he could program the radio for either LUX or NON-LUX applications. He works (supposedly) for GM. I received the radio, hooked it up and it worked 50/50. I had sound but there was a horrible ground loop. Buzzing, and static on the speakers even when the car was off/doors open. Seller has been very cooperative and said he wasn't sure of the issue.

 

Basically, what I want to do is get the LUX amp, make the necessary modifications, and have him program the radio back to LUX.

 

Has anyone ever heard of this radio being able to work in both LUX and non-LUX applications? The radio model is: 15204335

 

Can someone tell me the part number of the LUX amp I should get? Thanks.

I have never heard of or seen any way to reprogram and headunit from lux to non-lux. There is nothing in any service programming for that. These headunits are built by Delphi and the differences in lux and non-lux are all hardware issues and not software issues. I have no clue what he may have done to the unit but a 15204335 is a lux HU and you should have had no sound at all if you installed it in a non-lux setup, second thing is the theftlock should have activated once you powered it up (key in the "run" position) if it was a used headunit. I don't think I would waste any money on changing your amp to a lux without first knowing if the headunit will still work in a lux setup. I would check the sellers recent purchases and see if he had recently purchased that unit from someone else and if just trying to get rid of a unit he screwed up or one he bought already screwed up. Not exactly sure how he did it. He said he has access to the radio programming and there are CALS to make the radio work in non-lux applications. I did confirm the part number, and the aduio sounded decent at a high level, but there was still the buzz. Sending the unit back to him to re-program back to LUX and he is sending me a LUX amp, which is the way I wanted to go originally.

 

Questions:

 

1) When I install the LUX amp, other than making the modifications at the AMP connector and adding the wire for the databus, are there any other modifications that need to be performed?

 

2) The AMP I am getting is a GM part #: 15191601. Am I correct in assuming this will work with both HU #15204334 and 15204335?

 

3) Will the factory AUX harness work (I have an iPod adaptor installed right now and that's what I'll use it for.)

I have a 2002 Envoy SLT with the 6 disc BOSE system.

Memory seats/Memory mirrors/DIC/Onstar

 

You mean to tell me I cannot upgrade to a NAV radio?! I "have" to have the class 2 data bus, dont I for all of the memory options?

 

Is there anyway that if Im not class 2 that I can still upgrade to a NAV radio?

 

I tried to read through this whole post, but to be honest.. I might be on SSI by the time I get through it...LOL

Thats right just the wiring changes at the amp connectors and the addition of the databus wire and also the addition of the noise compensated mic (for the noise compensated volume to work)

The amp will work with both 334 and 335, 335 is the later model and has a few more features to it. And yes your Aux input harness will remain as it is and work the same as it does now.

Sorry, but the systems changed in 03 and the Nav units will only work with the 03-05 class II databus. The 02's had all the goodies (Bose, CD changer, memory, Onstar, info center, etc) but it wasn't a class II system it was the old way with tons more wiring.

CDX harness #15312903 (Is this for both types of CD changers? I need the floor mount version.

 

I still need to purchase:

CD Changer – Can I purchase one from a Retail shop (Alpine) or go with the GM so it is plug and play…

Disk – what is the part number?

I would go with the GM changer and it is plug n play.

that harness will work with both types but it may be short for floor mounting

He even tried going in under a 2004 model, which allowed him to choose "Navigation Radio" in that step and it allowed him to move one more step, but "Special Functions" never came up. He says he belives that the radio isn't communicating."

Don't know if you ever got someone to help you with your problem. Your problem likely is that your tech is trying to program "your vehicle", a vehicle that the tech II does not recognize as a vehicle with a NAV option, so you won't get the NAV option on the techII. Ask your tech to use denali or trailblazer or envoy, when setting up the tech II, a vehicle that came factory with a NAV option.

 

Other thing to try is recheck cable and pin connections, especially the classII wire. No bent pins, etc

Thanks for the reply. I am going to go through and recheck my pins, but my feeling is this: if there was a problem with my data wire, I don't believe that the Nav unit would switch between daytime and nightime screens when I turn on my headlights. It also recognizes that it is a GMC. If I'm not mistaken, both of these obtain this info from the serial data connection. I did have one response to program the HU using the "uplevel" selection listed under the 2003 model year ("base" and "uplevel" are the only selections listed under 2003). The problem we were running into, and I'm not sure where this ties in, is that no matter what the tech has chosen as the vehicle, the "special functions" selection never comes up on the Tech II. This is where the unlock is performed. I'm not sure if it is his Tech II or my HU, but he says it seems there is no communication between the two. I am going to take it to a different dealer this week to see if they have better luck.

Can you "DIM" the display with your dimmer? This is done through the data wire as well.

KDC Racer, another thing to try if you didn't think of it. If you have a code reader. Set up a DTC by pulling a key fuse somewhere, and see if your port is communicating. Can you remove the code, etc.? If you don't have a reader, autozone will lend you one.
