NAV and 6 disk changer in a Silverado

I just finished my install of the navigation unit/amp and most everything works great. I am taking it in tomorrow to have the Theftlock unlocked. The only problem I have is that now the RSA will not work. Is this a common problem?

I can make the Nav unit work by bypassing the TheftLock, but the RSA still won't work. Also, I took the truck to the dealer today and the tech worked on it for 30 minutes before giving up and saying that he could not unlock it. Has anyone else had this trouble with the dealer? I feel that the HU is communicating with the BCM correctly, as I'm getting the GMC logo on start-up. I'm not giving up yet.

Somewhere in this thread there is a Tech-II procedure to unlock the HU. If your HU is not defective then I would wonder if the dealer-tech followed the procedure exactly.

If your RSA connections are secure, you could try a data bus jumper wire between the HU and the RSA. Power, ground, and data bus are the key wires here.

 

I finally secured another lux amp and so far no problems. Still waiting on a DVD to play with the nav functions.

Great post!  LOTS of information.  But I have a question about the VSS connection.

 

I'm planning to purchase a non-lux TNR for my 2003 Yukon and and was wondering if anybody knows what the VSS is actually used for?  Is it just to let the nav system know that the vehicle is moving, or that it is moving a certain speed?

 

One post around page 12 or 13 mentioned adding a bypass switch to temporarily disconnect the VSS which would allow you to program the nav while moving.  What I'm wanting to see is if there's another way "trick" the nav into thinking the VSS is connected, but still be able to program a destination without adding a switch.

 

If the nav uses actual vehicle speed to compensate for slow GPS updating, then this is probably not possible.  But if the VSS is actually a discrete of some sort, then it should be able to be bypassed.  Anybody got any ideas?

The VSS helps make the navigation faster and smoother, thus adding accuracy. It also keeps the nav working in low or poor GPS signal areas. Adding the switch is only needed if you want to be able to change or add destinations while the vehicle is in motion.

Also, I didn't see too much info on the Rear Seat Audio in this thread. If I'm adding the Nav and CDX to my Non-Lux Bose system, is there anything special I need to do to retain the RSA? Is the CDX compatible with RSA as well? Thanks.

Yes, the Nav HU is compatible with both the CDX and RSA (and RSE) and there is nothing extra you will have to do for the RSA.

Nav units are not supported in service programming (factory installed or not)) so the tech may have to call tech line for the proper procedure and some of the TNR's are not unlockable if not in the original host vehicle. As far as the RSA, it should work when you bypassed the theftlock. Does the RSA power up and just not play or does it do nothing. I'm guessing the RSA is not getting the databus signal, you can check it at the RSA connector and it should show voltage around 5 volts

Complete the following procedure, using a scan tool, in order to properly set up communication:

At the System Selection Menu screen, select: Body

At the Vehicle Identification screen, select the following:

Appropriate model

Appropriate Air Conditioning

Navigation Radio

At the Body Screen, select: Navigation Radio.

At the Radio screen, select: Special Functions.

At the Special Functions screen, select: VIN Relearn.

At the VIN Relearn screen, the scan tool will display "Do you want to clear radio theft information?"

To begin clearing, press the soft touch key on the top right of the scan tool. The scan tool will display "Clearing Radio Theft in Progress."

The radio theft will learn the VIN. Without learning the VIN, the radio will display a locked message.

This is the same procedure that I got from another forum. The problem is that under a 2003 GMC, when you are supposed to select "Navigation Radio", it doesn't give you that as a choice. He even tried going in under a 2004 model, which allowed him to choose "Navigation Radio" in that step and it allowed him to move one more step, but "Special Functions" never came up. He says he belives that the radio isn't communicating.

Since I posted in this thread nearly a year ago, you have all convinced me to go ahead and finally upgrade.

 

I have a non-lux and will be getting the TS Nav eventually. I have gutted my sound system, bose drivers that is, and running rears (infinity ref) off the bose amp and fronts and 10" subs off a 4x200 amp, interfacing using a PAC OEM-1. This sounds very nice. In playing around, I can say that the weak part of the BOZO is the drivers, which resembled chinese crackers I ate recently. Just replacing them with hi-efficiency infinity made a world of difference, the best $150 you can spend. If you do nothing else, do this.

 

I did a complete sound deadening of the vehicle, killing 12 dB of road and engine noise (2500HD D-Max). Even the bozo "bass cube" sounded better (not good yet) after that.

 

Quick one:

 

Is there a harness wire that would work well as an amp trigger, ie 12V when stereo is switched on? I found one that is 12V ignition, but would prefer a trigger that keeps the amp off if the HU is off.

I guess the answer is no, looking at a previous post. But now I am really confused. Several Nav units on EBAY. All of them say that the ...287 is for non Y91 vehicles, and the ...531 is for Y91 vehicles. My head is spinning, all posts here say just the opposite.

Because GM feels the need to have identical parts with different part numbers, you will find many different TNR part numbers now

TNR Radios:

You have it right, the sellers on ebay don't really know, one person listed it that way then everybody seen that and started listing that same info on their auctions not knowning weather it was correct or incorrect info and now they have everybody screwed up.

I sold my old IRN on ebay and had it listed as a non-lux non-Y91 with the right part number and the man who bought it installed it in a 2005 Yukon with Y91 and it didn't have any sound. He thought I would refund his money because he believed the other seller's listings and thought it would work even after my listing said it wouldn't.

I tried this on a 2003 Silverado and it worked fine. Can't see any reason why GMC should be any different? Sorry it didn't work.

Hi Everyone. I came across this forum tonight, and it has a lot of good information. Thanks. Here's my situation. (Let me preface by saying I have an '03 Tahoe Z71, non-lux amp.

 

I purchased the "non-touchscreen" nav radio from a reputable ebayer who stated he could program the radio for either LUX or NON-LUX applications. He works (supposedly) for GM. I received the radio, hooked it up and it worked 50/50. I had sound but there was a horrible ground loop. Buzzing, and static on the speakers even when the car was off/doors open. Seller has been very cooperative and said he wasn't sure of the issue.

 

Basically, what I want to do is get the LUX amp, make the necessary modifications, and have him program the radio back to LUX.

 

Has anyone ever heard of this radio being able to work in both LUX and non-LUX applications? The radio model is: 15204335

 

Can someone tell me the part number of the LUX amp I should get? Thanks.
