Steering Moan while parking

Sometimes when pulling into or out of a tight parking spot, I hear a loud "moaning" sound from the tire area. The tires aren't rubbing and there is no clicking sound. Just an annoying whinning moaning sound. Anyone ever heard of this before? Please let me know. Thanks

anytime the steering wheel is turned all the way to the end the

power steering pump will moan and groan. it's normal and not recommended

that you keep the wheel turned all the way for any length of time

hard on the pump.

When a PS pump is low on fluid it will make a groaning noise. You might check your level to make sure that's not it. If it is low, you may have a leak somewhere that you will need to find.

At about 20K miles on my '02 Silverado, I started hearing this groan while turning into or out of a parking space or other slow speed turns. It would happen when I would be turning the wheel fairly quickly. It continued to get worse to where it would happen every time... Took the truck in under warranty. They replaced the power steering pump and the sterring gear box (?). I would have to find the paper work to be sure, but they swapped some steering parts. This took care of the problem for a while.

Now at 31K miles, it is happening again. Same noise. Took it back to the dealer and they said that they could not reproduce it. I didn't have the time that day, but it will be going back soon and I will take the service mgr for a ride and demonstrate it for him. It's still under the original warranty and I do have the extended warranty, but I want them to fix it before I have to pay the $50 deductable on the ext. warranty.

The symptoms you describe are EXACTLY the problem I was having. The intermediate shaft lube stopped the 'knocking' but she was still moaning... The steering gear was replaced on warranty last week. Problem solved!

May or not be related - take it out of auto 4 wheel drive and put it into 2 wheel drive. Mine will moan and bump a little if left in auto 4 wheel drive and turning the wheels.
