service engine light

I have been checking out this site for a while now, alot of good information, but this my first time posting. I have a 2001 silverado LS ext cab 5.3, 35k miles, 37 months old. I was driving down my road today and hit a big pot hole with my right front tire. There was a huge jolt, you know the kind that makes you wince and say ouch! After I got over it, about a half mile, I noticed the check engine light was on. I was on my way to the gym. I parked and worked out for 90 minutes. When I started the truck the light came on and stayed on the whole way home. Could the jolt from the pot hole cause this?

I suppose the impact from the crater could have jarred something loose like a sensor or something, or knocked a piece of carbon loose that is now stuck on a sensor.

I'd take the truck to AutoZone (or the like) and have them hook it up to an analyzer (it's free).

......or disconnect the battery neg for about 5 minutes reconnect, drive it see if it comes back on! this will reset the computer.

Thanks for the replies. Will disconecting the battery erase the code? I read in the manual that the light comes on when there is a problem with the emitions system. Maybe the conection on the o2 sensor. I do not know exactly where it is located but it is something I want to check.

my light has come on a couple of times, once was a bad gas gap, another was a bad emissions solenoid valve. I think once for a clogged fuel injector as well.

auto zone can get you close to what is wrong, but you almost have to go to the dealership to find out what exaclty is wrong.

for example, the last time the ses light came on i took it to autozone first, their little computer said it was an emissions problem. well, that doesnt help because there are lots of parts to the emissions problem. took it to the dealer, their computer tells them "replace solenoid valve".

i know it sucks to have to take it to the dealer, but it beats playing the guessing game to get the right part...

Went to autozone after work today. Used their scan tool and pulled up code P1416. The description was auxiliary emissions controls. I checked for any loose wires or hoses and couldn't find any, nothing apparent anyway. If the problem has anything to do with emissions I should still be covered under warranty, right? I hate the idea of having to pay the dealership $100 to put it on their computer and then what ever to fix the problem.

It should be covered for 50K miles,but dont qoute me on that.Some dealers would try to get around that some how

Just had the same problem. P1416 is a bad air check valve on bank 2. Bank 2 is the passenger side. The dealer repaired mine under warranty.

I ended up going to the dealer today armed with good information about code P1416. The problem was the air check valve. The service writer said they would cover it under warranty. I don't know if they were being nice since my truck is just 29 days out of warranty or if it was covered under the emissions warranty. Either way I am just happy the problem is solved, the light is off and my wallet is no emptier than it was before. Thanks for the help.

They probably just did that since you were just out of warranty. Basic warranty 3/36 covers everything bumper to bumper. Only emission components covered past that is the PCM and the cat converters. Which is covered under the Federal Emissions warranty. Its stated in your light truck warranty manual.

I have the same error code and description. Any idea on how much it would cost to get this issue fixed at the dealer? Or, a detailed description on how to repair it and what part to purchase?
