Transimission Problem?

Recommended Posts

THis just started happening. It doesnt happen always but has happened regularly on two occasions. I am driving along the truck shifts, then there is a sort of a kick back in the truck. Like something catches and almost pushes forward on the truck. It sounds like the transmission to me. It is only 87k miles. Anyone have any ideas or do I need to explain this better? :)

It "could" be a sprag clutch starting to stick/slip and fail. If it is, it will only get worse. It is hard to say otherwise without more data.

Is that expensive to fix and should I take it to the dealer or what?

Does it do this in all of the shift points or just at certain shifts? 1-2, 2-3, etc. :)

When sprags fail (if that is what it is) it requires a complete tear down to repair. They are major key mechanical components in that tranny.

It may just be a dirty or worn valve body or broken/worn accumulater springs....

or even a bad TPS (or going bad)...seems to me a sprag going bad would cause the symptoms to be more frequent...but I could be wrong.....it may be worth your time to have a GOOD tranny shop look at it...

Sprags can sometimes slip and grab when they get worn or damaged before they fail. I cannot tell for sure without driving it but it does kinda sound like it. I hope I am wrong though for his sake.

How much am I looking at in worse case scenario?

:)

"IF" it is a sprag and it fails and shells out it can take other tranny parts with it. It is worse to lose one of those, potenial damage wise, than a clutch pack. You might take it in for a few free tranny inspections and see what they tell you. I hope I am wrong but that is what they can do sometimes when they get to end of service life. (Usually they do not warn you much) It would require a complete teardown to replace it.
