I was driving to work today on the freeway, right away I noticed my truck feeling sluggish and quick to deccelerate when I lifted my foot off the gas. Habit quickly directed me to pull the e-brake release (that is what it felt like, the brakes were engaged) but the e-brake was not engaged.

I then noticed my rpm range higher than normal at the speed I was travelling (70 mph) Made me think the truck was laboring more than usual...no wind or weather. Then my "check engine soon" light came on and stayed on the dash.I have 25,242 miles on this 2000 Z-71 5.3L.

I have done several performance mods quite some time ago, I was preparing myself for some sort of transmission failure in the future sine I have heard that running 3.73 gears with 36" tires and towing a 7200# boat/sea-doo package was going to blow the seals out of my 460L-E. It has seemed to be shifting erratically. Could any tranny problem send a trouble code? Or could the hestitation and sudden miss at idle I found today be linked to something as simple as bad gas?

Thanks for any help

It could be numerous things, from ignition to trans.  The best way to get an idea of what is wrong is to find out what trouble codes are turning on the Check Engine light.

I have no experience pulling trouble codes from this vehicle. I know how to do simple diagnosis on my 89 camaro by turning the key on and off a thousand times and counting flashes...but not my truck..

Is there somewhere anyone knows of that may offer any info...or do I have to go succumb to a dealer?

It's possible that some of the bigger part stores may have a "code reader" for the newer trucks.  I'd give them a buzz...
