budhayes3 Posted September 25, 2004 Posted September 25, 2004 What's an ACI test anyway? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I was wondering that too, but I thought that it was something I should know so I was afraid to ask...thanks for askin!
Mighty HD Posted September 25, 2004 Author Posted September 25, 2004 ACI = American Concrete Institute. It's a certification requited for FDOT inspectors. They have several areas of certification. I hopefully will be certified as a concrete field testing tech. Whenever the concrete comes to the jobsite, if required by FDOT specs, I have to test for slump, air content, tempature, water/cement ratio, and yeild if required by the contract documents. Most of the time I do not perform the tests. The contractor provides a testing firm to do the actual testing, I just watch them to ensure that it is being done right, or if I feel it is needed, I'll do them as well and my results will be used in place of theirs. That's the benefit of working for an engineering firm, vs a testing lab. Concrete is amazing stuff. There's so much to it. I/they do these tests because each one can greatly affect the strength of the cement. Some may not think that it does, but believe me, it will. Here's a history on ACI http://www.concrete.org/general/AHistoryofACI.pdf http://www.cmec.org/cert_field_we.shtml Florida uses CTQP and CMEC to mostly provide the classes needed for inspectors to become certified. http://www.cmec.org/ http://ctqp.ce.ufl.edu/index.htm
