Adding switches

After greatly increasing my knowledge of adding switches by reading the forum on backup aids, a few more questions have come to mind, so here goes-

Understanding that there are different switches for the left and right of the 4 pod housing, does anybody have a list of what is available for each side (labels), and their part #'s ?

On my Sierra, there is a spot below the cargo lamp switch (left of steering wheel) where the factory driving light switch would go. Is it a direct fit to add the switch, or is something else required to put a switch there? Are there any other switches that fit in this location?

Thanks,

Todd

Todd, the only one that I know of that will fit on the left side is the fog lamp switch and to add that you have to buy the whole new switch set up since they are togetor (the fog light and cargo lamp).  As for the right side I don't have any part numbers for those, just the aux lamps switch for the left side.

Thanks for the Info. I'm guessing that to add driving lights, it might be easiest to add a switch to the 4 pod housing. I suppose that would be cheaper also, being that you are buying one switch instead of two.

When I was doing research before, I got a print out of a list of the different switches. All their descriptions say Aux Switch. No description about the part. There is different kinds of switches. Some have back lighting, some have an LED to show off and on, some are the soft button (like the factory fog light button) and some switches are an on/off type where it pushes in for on and out for off.

The list has about 30 different part numbers and they all look the same (ie; Aux Switch). I'm going to be researching it more at the start of the year, but this is the info i have right now.

Again, Thanks for the Info. I'm thinking about adding both front and rear lights (I don't have factory fog lamps), and have been trying to decide how to best tell the two switches apart. I'm sure I could remember, but that's just not professional-like. I would like to do all interior wiring at once, even if the buttons don't all work yet, so I need to figure out my shopping list. I have yet to decide if there I have need for a third switch.

I here you on that one.  I've got some 100watt off-road lights up front to an aux lamps switch.  I'd like to replace thos w/ some 55watt driving lamps so I can actually use them on the street, or I may get the piaa air dam and some driving lights in there (still debating).  But when I do that I'll also add some back up lights and I don't want to have two "Aux Lamps" switches right next to each other.  Hopefully Jason can find something out.  Or would there be a way to hook up aftermarket lights so they'll run off the factory switch, that would solve all of my problems.

This is just a guess, but I would think you could add aftermarket lights and the stock switch, in the same way as any other switch, it would just be on the other side of the wheel. If it is one large connecter that plugs into both switches (cargo and driving lights), I guess that would be a problem since the factory switch goes to the PCM. Personaly, I wouldn't want the added lights going through the PCM, because I want full control, and not some system where the headlights need to be on to run your driving lights.

I don't know, I like the fact that I can make aftermarket lights dummy proof.  I don't have to worry about leaving them on and plus I wouldn't need to turn them on unless I had the headlights on anyways.

Todd,   Hey check down a little further

in this topic under R&D Accesories or

look for Mountineer toms posts.

He found a Gm 4 place mounting

piece (fits where the aux. roof light &

pass. air bag switches fit to add 2

addl. switches.  His web has full details

and pixs for you to check it out.

Suprised he hasn't chimed in here !

Well I'm working on getting a set of Hella 550's put on the grilleguard of my truck and a set of kc back-up lamps put near the hitch receiver on the back end.  I've got 2 different styled gm factory switches for this...unfortunately they're at the shop right now, so I don't have the numbers handy.  The install is supposed to be done on the 14th after a few months of screwing around trying to find a place that would install the lights using the factory switches...everyone wanted to use the switches in the kits or whatnot...but I figure if the pod is there, why not use it?  I'll see how it goes and use the new digital cam to post pictures as best I can.

I must have missed this thread earlier.  Here's the page with the info on the 4 pod housing: http://tommy3z71.homestead.com/hl_overide.html

Thanks to Jason Pendlum for the info and part numbers.

Allrighty...have Hella 550's on the grille guard and KC back-up lamps on the rear...a shop down the street did the install.  I originally tried to use 2 different style switches...Don't have both part numbers, but 1 is 15722980.  It has a 6 pin connection on the back if I recall.  It is also backlit with the headlights and has a little LED indicator as well.  This is running the front fogs at this time.  The rear wiring could not be finished yet because the other switch I had blindly ordered only had 4 connections on the back.  So what will end up happening, is I'll have 2 15722980's.  I'll probably have the front switch mounted above the rears.  So far so good.  The rear switch will be finished up Monday.  Jason Pendlum has some knowledge on this topic, and I'd again like to thank him for the assistance assembling wiring harnesses for me.  Pictures to follow if I get a nice day around here to clean the truck up.
