PLEASE HELP!! Very LOUD Ticking 6.0L

I know there are threads about this, but I didn't see any type of resolutions...

Anyway, I will take my 04 2500HD in tomorrow for them to "check out the noise", what should I expect from the dealer? It's within warranty, and I don't want to get told, "it's normal."

Has anyone had experience with this? It is a very loud ticking noise that sounds like it's coming from the bottom of the engine, I have about 7K miles, and it didn't start doing this until around 6K during my trip to California this last week. It makes the noise at idle, but then seems to go away during acceleration. So far it doesn't seem to affect normal operation., but man, it is loud - and very embarrassing.

When I called the dealer, they asked me what type of oil filter I used when I changed the oil, and I told them I used GM just like what was already there. Are they going to give me a hard time because I didn't have them change it? They better not. I used 5-30 Mobil 1.

I have the same problem with my 6.0 in my 02 Suburban and I have taken my truck in several times and was told this is normal for this engine. Apparently these engines have short piston skirts and they clack when they are cold. And I know what you mean about embarrassing. I thought they corrected this problem in the later model years, but I guess not. Take it to the Dealer just in case and don't be surprised if they say it's normal. The only thing that I did was keep the invoices from the service visits and if something blows up I have proof that I tried to correct it. Also, I believe the General is aware of it as well and why they do nothing, only they have that answer. :seeya:

This doesn't happen only when the engine is cold, this happens all the time, cold, warm, or hot. In fact, I have found that sometimes, during a cold start, it won't make the noise, but after the egine warms up a little, it starts the noise, and doesn't go away.

This really sucks.

Yeah, I hear ya, mine does the same thing and your right it does suck. This problem is the only thing that bugs me about this truck and that's after many attemps to get the problem corrected. :seeya::cool:

That has to be really frustrating. Like you, I am otherwise very happy with the truck. I am hoping they maybe have a new software "patch" to download to the computer which may help. I also read that someone put in a little heavier motor oil and that helped a little. I'll let you know what they tell me tomorrow - my stance will be that this is not acceptable, let's see how it goies. I hate having to deal with car dealers, it's always a fight.

Wecome to the world of piston slap, my 2001 6.0 did it all the time but after adding a bottle of injector, carbon reducer at every oil change it all but went away soon after I started running the cleaner but I since sold it so I could get an extra cab for more room. Try this web site www.piston slap.com alotta info in there. put the piston slap together in the web address ,no space, all one word

That is lifter tap you are hearing and it is common for these motors. The dealer will no doubt tell you the same thing. My truck has been doing it for the longest time. My truck has almost 87,000 miles on it with no signs of problems being caused by the lifter noise. Through in a bit of CSK and it is annoying, but there is not much to be done about it. The truck runs great though, just noisy at startup and bit of lifter tap when warm...

Mine used to make the noise, and it still does. But for a while it quit, after the dealer did a top end cleaning. (Carbon build-up?)

Also the noise all but dissapears after some hard engine working, like towing a heavy trailer.

There really isn't too much to expect. The dealers get this all the time and GM tells them what can and can't be done. It is sad to hear its on the newer trucks though. I would expect, if you whine or put up a fuss, that they would give you a 100K or 7 year warrenty for free. If not, keep whining till you get it. Your dealer may try to clean the top, which may work for a bit.

Chevyfreek and I have almost identical trucks. i have 82K on mine now and I have a hard knock that comes from under the engine. It goes away after a 5-10 minutes. I have lifter noise too. The thing is, other than a quart or two of oil per oil change that the truck drinks, i haven't had a single problem with the engine.

If the noise is coming from carbon buildup, you may want to make sure you buy detergent gas. Many Super blends are detergent. Some companies blend detergents into their lower octane fuels too. You may want to ask around where you live and/or where you gas up most of the time.

Guys..... Don't confuse Cold start Knock with the "ticking" noise at idle.

CO......You say the tick is at idle not at start up...correct?

If so what your hearing is fuel pulsing thru the fuel rails and injector poppets.

Sure does drive you crazy. But it is normal.

It is NOT the lifters..New GMs use roller rockers.......

I had this noise in my 01 6.0 along with CSK. My 04 has the "tick" also but NO CSK!

The tech at the dealer whipped out his stethoscope and let me listen to the valve covers, fuel rails, injectors............

The noise indeed was/is fuel pulse, injector noise....... :seeya: ............geo

If it's really as loud as you say, it doesn't sound normal to me. Then again, what some customers call REAL loud is often a noise I can barely hear and my hearing is fine. :seeya:

Roller lifters/rockers can make noise just like non-roller . An internal hydraulic problem in the lifter that doesn't allow it to maintain zero lash is going to result in noise, regardless of the the type of lifters/rockers. Injectors tick for sure, but it isn't something I'd call loud. I'd say you probably need the stethoscope to hear it. It doesn't sound like piston noise since you say it isn't only when the engine is cold.

Bottom line? Wait and see what you hear from the service department.

I have a '01 6.0 and live in CO. Mine is a lot noisier with cold nights, it also always makes noise at any temp though. The noise is loud enough to hear 20 feet away through the wall of my house. I have not been able to duplicate this loud of a noise at any dealership; because hard to plan to drop the truck off before a really cold spell. Though the noise is loud enough that people at the dealership dropping off their cars all turned their heads when I started the truck. All in all, I have heard many times it is "normal." Mine knocks, not ticks, anytime it is started, I can hear the tick also. It has run pretty much Shell exclusively, has all highway miles, had a top engine cleaner ran through it twice (made no difference), and I give it a bottle of Mobil injector cleaner every oil change. If it is carbon deposits causing this, it is hard for me to believe with all the cleaners that go through the thing.

Anyways, the only thing I have found to help at all, is I switched to 10-30W last oil change, and the knock has been a lot less severe and almost disappeared on warmer days. I still contend that the knock is either a very bad case of CSK or something else. Either way, I should not have to deal with a $32,000+ vehicle making so much noise that it draws the attention of most of the people in a parking lot. I just hope the engine holds up for me.

OK. I got back from the dealer a little while ago. The noise is very very loud, you can hear it clearly from 30 ft away.

Right off the bat, they said it didn't sound like piston slap. After they checked it out, they said it was a cracked Flex Plate (between the tranny and engine), and that this is a known issue with GM. They will replace it tomorrow. I really hope that's what it is, and that the noise will go away when replaced. So, after thinking it was the infamous slap/csk/lifter issue, it turned out to be something totally different. If any of you guys (or gals) have the same sound, this is something new you can suggest that they check out.

Thanks for all the replies, I will post again tomorrow after the flex plate replacement - hopefully with an engine that hums like it used to.
