Now that I have the "crew"zing machine, I've realized that it would be nice to have one of the rolling covers for the bed for "dry" storage, (luggage, stuff, etc) but be able to get the cover out of the way easily in case I wanted to haul something. Anyway, I've been reading about covers and was just wondering about anyone's previous experience with the Rollbak, Pace Edwards, or the Retrax covers. All look like good products, but the opinions of those who have first hand knowledge is what I'm looking for. So if you have or have had one of these tops I'd like to know your opinions, likes, dislikes, etc. Thanks in advance for your help.

You didn't mention Foldacover. I have it on my '05 GMC Sierra crew and love it. It has 4 hard foldable panels and is lockable. It gives you up to 3/4 access to your bed and can be removed by unbolting it. Check it out!

I had a Retrax and it was water resistant, not completely water tight. Washing or hard rains would let some water puddle inside, though it wasnt a problem if I parked it on the slope part of my driveway.

 

It was very good fit and finish, though I think having a cover of some sort that you can stand on, or at least put lots of weight on, would be nice. I think you could put 100 pounds on the Retrax, cant remember for sure.

 

My only real dislike was it seemd to take up a lot more space than advertised. I think they have since made the roll up area smaller, but the one I had made the first foot of the bed fairly useless, and taking it out/off was a two person job. It could be removed easily, but wasnt easily removable (I hope that made sense).

I prefer painted hard covers, but they scratch the hell out of your bed...

I have an extang soft one, on my 04 ECSB and I love it, I profered it over a hard one because of the hail storms we have here and if I need to haul something Big I can just roll it out of the way, oh it looks great too (Black on red) you can get the soft covers in many different colors

I like the soft cover too! I have an Extang cover that rolls up or tilts up. It can be completly removed as well !!! Got it off ebay for $155 to the door.

The hard roll up covers seem awfull expensive to me but at least they're more versatile than a hard cover that only tilts up.

I just installed a Retrax a few weeks ago, so I don't have much pratical use opinions about it yet. It is the new Gen 3 version. Very high quality, great instructions, easy to use, will lock in any position (not just every 12 inches like most roll ups). It does take up some room in the front of the bed but all roll ups will. I bought the Retrax because it was lighter than the metal ones and is painted not vinly covered. The vinyl covered ones need to be taken care of since they will fade and look bad after a while. I also installed Bushwacker bed rail protectors under it and PUTCO SS/Chrome pop-up rails over it.

I also have a retrax. I went with a hard cover for the security. I put a lock on the tailgate that allows me to secure the bed. I have had it for 6 months. Not a single problem. It is strong, light, water resistant, as has been mentioned, and looks great. Installation requires two people but is very easy. You do lose some bed space at the front. I have GM bedrail covers. The combination looks factory designed and I have received several compliments about how cool it looks and works.

 

My only wish was that I could use the truck door key to lock it. I have too many keys already. My daughter and her friends want to paint a mural on it. (is that over sharing? )

I have the Pace Edwards Jack Rabbit, and for my needs I like it. I really like the flush look. It seems fairly heavy to me, but I don't think it's any heavier than any other solid style cover.

 

Pros:

Asthetically pleasing (IMO)

Good Quality

Flush

It locks

 

Cons:

Not Watertight

Takes up some bed space

I have an '04 Sierra Crew Z71, Pace Edwards Bed Locker electric retractable cover with the tail gate lock option and love it. It has a clean look like the Jackrabitt, but with the convenience of a remote. You do loose a little bed space ~ 6"-8", but I have not had problem hauling 4x8 sheets of plywood or sheet rock. It makes the bed a bit more versatile and secure. As for "dry", there is not completely dry retractable cover. Water penetration usually occurs at the tailgate joint. The Bedlocker comes with a tail gate gasket, but my installer indicated they don't stick well to spray in liners. All-in-all I am very happy with it. I also purchased the dash button that is hard wired to the cover control module.

Just put a Truxedo soft cover on. Seems very well made, looks great with the low profile look and is easy to remove.

My deal was I wanted some coverage for the back, but I use my box a lot so a hard cover wouldn't make sense. Too much pain removing etc.. The lock and rolls are cool but take up too much room up front. This worked for me.

I figured none of them were watertight, but I am thinking about getting the jackrabbit eventually. How much leaking does it actually do? I mean just a little dampness around the edges or standing water in the bed?

I have a Truxedo on my sportside 02 and I love it, it leaks very little and it is very durable and I mean very I have had things stretching it in the winter when it is most fragile and no tears or stress marks. GREAT cover and I believe it may be one of only a few with a lifetime warranty on everything related to the cover including well everything.

I put a D Bak or "backflip" from truckaddons.com. on my '06 xtra short bed Sierra. It looks great but... I've had it for a month and it finally rained last night.. Everything is soaked. I wouldn't reccomend it if you're trying to keep things not only safe but dry. Seems silly to have to keep everything in totes under the cover. I'll never buy a cover online again. I want to see it and talk to owners before I plunk down ~$600 again.. Since I've had it over 14 days, I can't return it..
