Need a New Battery

Recommended Posts

Went to start my truck this morning and it was so dead that the "key in the ignition" chime wouldn't even make any noise. The truck has alomost 80,000 on it and the start-ups have been sounding a lot weaker over the last few months. Now it is dead - so, I will be buying a battery tonight.

I am thinking about going to Wal-Mart. What CCA should I get? What Brand?

Thanks.

Make sure to toss the lead spacer between the two positive cable lugs.

In-Famous POS battery post problem once that connection is loosened for the first time. Kills alternatore, subsequent batteries and wacky electricals.

It's covered over at my buddies site under batteries what happens when they go bad at: POS batter post

There are several articles on that topic, so read up. Easy fix. Here's the picture of my fix:

I buy either AC Delco batteries or Die Hard gold, check your local parts stores for AC Delco, and Sears for the Die hard gold.

I personally get the Duralast batteries at Autozone. My last two vehicles have had them, and I have never had to replace them again. One of their series of batteries has a 3 year full replacement warranty, 8 year prorated. Both of my vehicles went ~6 years before I sold them, and I never had a problem.

I think my next battery will be an Optima. It's the one that looks like a plastic 6-pack cooler. They're supposed to be one of the best around.

I don't think those bare wires are a good idea... :flag:

Another vote for Optima Red top. Pep Boys sells them. I've been using one the last 4 years and 120K and it's still going strong including a few times being drained due to stereo blasting.

Regarding the bare wires, no problem unless you happen to weld a wrench across the 2 terminals :flag: I have mine setup the same way with the bare wires. It's certainly better than the LAME oem setup.

Personally, I only use Interstate batteries, especially after having spent mucho dinero at both Wally World and Autozone that basically added up to more than what I would've spent on an Interstate in the first place. I have an '03 Silverado and at the first sign of battery trouble this past winter, I went ahead and replaced the stocker so that I wouldn't end up stranded anywhere. :D

I replaced both of my batteries this fall with the Die Hard truck and SUV batteries. They had the Highest CCA and where about $90 each. The only thing to look out for was that the one in sears' book was actualy the "wrong" (not so much wrong as just not biggest) one for my truck, I could actualy fit a much larger battery into my Tahoe; so I would recomend bringing a tape measure and measureing the tray and height, and then evaluate what battery you buy.

The Battery info for my battery is:

Part Number 39809

CCA 875

Form 78/34 (I think)

Warrentee 3 yr replacement 100 month pro-rate

Replaced mine with another AC-Delco. I actually put a Delco in my first car after the battery tanked(car was an 85 Dodge 600, ah yes K cars), as well as a replacement in my 92 Jimmy.

Replace it with another Delco battery. Delco batteries have lead calcium plates. This is why they do not gas and are sealed. Lead calcium batteries require a higher charge voltage. If you stick a standard maintenance type battery (lead antimony construction) in you truck it will be overcharging a will gas excessively.

Don’t screw with the terminals. They are sealed to prevent corrosion. If you expose the terminals, like in the previous example, they will corrode.

A battery that does not gas and sealed terminals will result in no maintenance to the terminals or battery. I have worn out GM cars and have never had to clean a single battery terminal. I always use Delco batteries and ensure the terminals are sealed like they came from the factory.

Don't buy on CCA only. I just prepared The technical specs for a battery bid on our fleet of over 600 vehicles. Trust me on this one.
