Just happened to have my registration on my desk, as the dealer needed me to pull it to update his records...

Tom,

GVW - Payload = net wt.

On an excab short bed 4x4 that equals out to

6400 - 1692 =  4708 lbs (dry wt) no fuel, people, accessories, etc...

(that is with the 4.8L and auto tranny)

Thanks for the info.  I need to get me a new floor jack because the one I had would lift high enough to raise my truck off the ground and I want to make sure I get one thats has a high enough rating.

Most of your weight is on the front, so to play it safe I'd get a 2-ton jack so you can lift both front wheels at the same time and still have a "security" factor.

On a side note...

And for all those who work under a hydraulic jack...  I think you're taking a big chance...  please use jackstands or blocks under any vehicle that is lifted in the air...  It's what I do, and it gives me the piece of mind that I'll see my kids tomorrow.

I agree 1000%  Very unsafe to trust JUST the jack.  I have 4 jack stands.  If I'm rotating tires, of course I use them all.  I always use at least a couple if I have the room just for security reasons.

I'm planning on getting a 2 1/2 ton that lifts up to 21 inches high.  That the highest lifting one I can find around here for a reasonable price.  The 15 inch max lifting jack I was using just didn't get the job done on the new truck.  Worked good on my 2wd '91.

Thanks again for the info Shaners.

I have been using my dads 1 1/4 ton jack.  This last time it wouldnt go high enough to get the front wheels off the ground.

I think i am going to buy a 3 ton.  Also a good idea is to set the parking brake.

My '92 Xcab LWB 4X4 with a 350 and a heavy toolbox full of tools, chains, etc. and a skinny boy (me) in the front seat weighs 5750.  Sans tool box and the skinny boy I'm estimating ~5250.
