Cheyanne, silverado, Scottsdale

Recommended Posts

This system is no longer in place, but yes, it was the trim level.  The order went Cheyenne, Scottsdale, Silverado.  I forget what year Scottsdale was phased out, leaving just Cheyenne and Silverado until the new series trucks came out.

We had a '96 Cheyenne.  Basically it was a work truck, vinyl seats and floor, no power accessories, etc.  We had a '90 that was a Silverado, cloth seats and carpet on the floor were really the only differences I remember, we didn't have any power accessories.  The 2000 we have now is a Silverado (actually it has a LT badge on it).  Power everything, cloth seats, good sound system, etc.

I don't remember either, but i know they had them in '91.  It was one of the trim levels we looked at when i got my '91.  It talks about the 3 levels in the '91 brochure also.  I'll read into it and post the differences for you inlinesix.

here is how it worked: (1978ish)

Ford :: Chevy

custom = custom deluxe

ranger (XL) = scottsdale

ranger xlt = cheyenne

ranger lariat = silverado

later on the cheyenne became more xl or base level and the custom deluxe was replaced by the W/T model

Ok, this is straight out of the brochure from '91.  The W/T and Cheyenne levels are decribed in the same section of the brochure.

----------

W/T 1500 / Cheyenne

 The W/T 1500 Work truck is designed for those who want a hard working full size pickup with a distinctly affordable price tag.  Available only as a 1500 (1/2 ton) Series Regular Cab with long cargo box (8 ft.), the W/T 1500 comes as either a 2WD © or 4X4 (K) model.  It offers somewhat fewer amenities and options than the standard C/K models, but the same powertrain and a considerably lower Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price.  Chevy's W/T 1500 Work Truck is equipped with the standard 4.3 liter (262 cu. in.) Vortec V6 engine with Electronic Fuel Injection, linked to a 5 speed manual transmission with overdrive.  It has a maximum payload rating of up to 1870 lbs. (Payload includes passenger, equipment and cargo.)

 The Cheyenne is the standard Chevy-and the 1/2 ton 2WD Cheyenne is Chevy's next-most-affordable full-size pickup.  Cheyenne comes in 1/2, 3/4, and 1 ton  versions (designated 1500, 2500, and 3500 series), with a wide choice of payload and towing capacities.

 Like the W/T 1500, it is available as either a 2WD or 4X4 model.  And, unlike the W/T 1500, Cheyenne offers you a wide selection of apperance, conveience and performance options.

 Both the W/T 1500 and Cheyenne feature easy entry, easy exit and room for three across on a big, wide, foam-cushioned, all-vinyl bench seat with folding backrest.  Both trucks also feature standard power steering, standard power front disc/rear drum brakes, a rear wheel anti-lock brake system (operates in 2WD mode only) and standard all-season steel-belted radial tires.

Scottsdale

 The optional mid level Scottsdale trim is an appealing dress-up look for a tough, all-around pickup.  It comes with all the Cheyenne trim plus the following exterior enhancements:  Deluxe front appearance package (dark argent grille with bright trim and rectangular composite halogen headlamps), rally wheels (not available with Big Dooley option), black body side and wheel opening moldings (except K3500 series and Sportside), chrome front bumper with black rub strip, and black applique with "Chevrolet" lettering on the tailgate.

 Interior touches include standard cloth bench seat with folding seat back (a custom vinyl seat is optional an no extra charge), custom steering wheel, extra in cab insulation, grained interior door panels with soft vinyl upper trim, integral armrest, map pockets and "Scottsdale" identification, color keyed rubber floor covering, and a full lenght cloth headliner.

Silverado

 The luxury level Silverado trim makes any Chevy fullsize pickup something really special with many of the touches you'd expect in a luxury sedan.  The Silverado trim includes all Scottsdale trim items plus the following exterior refinements:  Deluxe bright accented rub strip on the chromed front bumper, bright wheel opening moldings (on fleetside models) and bright accented body side molding, swing out rear quarter windows (on extended cab models), deluxe tailgate trim with "Chevrolet" letters over bright aluminium applique, and an excusive "Chevrolet" tailgate insert on Sportside models.

 Silverado interior highlights include:  A custom vinyl seat (custom cloth seat trim available at no extra cost, and includes fold down center arm rest).  A special process formed seat construction bonds the Silverado's seat frame, foam cushion and trim material to provide a stylish seat contoured to the human body.  Other nicities inside the Silverado include:  an electronically tuned AM/FM stereo radio with seek and scan and digital clock, color keyed carpeting, soft vinyl two tone door trim panels with integral armrest, map pockets and "Silverado" identification, and a color keyed cloth headliner.

----------

Whew! Lots of typing, fingers must rest. :thumbs:

There is also pretty good size list of individually available options (like dome and reading lights, rear window defoger, etc) that shows what is optional and what is included with the 3 trim levels.  If there is anything in particular you can think of, just let me know and I'll tell you what it says in the book.

Heres a link to some pics of my '91 with the Silverado trim level.  The first two pictures is how it looked the day we bought it.  1991 Black Silverado

Hope this helps.

The last year you could get the "Scottsdale" package was in 1993.  Same with the GMC "SLX" package.

later on the cheyenne became more xl or base level and the custom deluxe was replaced by the W/T model

The last year for the Custom Deluxe package was 1986.  In 1987 GM started calling the trucks R/V and had only the three packages.  The W/T and the 454SS both became available in spring 1990.

BTW, Jpshostr: Your 00 C/K cannot be a LT.  It'd have to be a LS, because the LT package never was available on the C/K's.  GM brought out the 1999 C/K's rather early because of the Silverado's entry in the fall.

Jp: Don't worry about it, you'll have plenty of chances to correct me!

GM's marketing packages are a little odd...

In 2001 the base package is the "Silverado".  Ten years ago in 1991, the "Silverado" was the best package and the "Cheyenne" was the base.  About 20 years before that, in 1971, the top package was the "Cheyenne Super" and the base was the "Custom".  About 10 years before that, about 1961, the top package was the "Custom".  Weird?!?!

Thats the truth!  I always wondered why they kept changing stuff around.

ford has strange packaging too...an xl (base model) f-150 can be optioned with a cd player, outsite temp/compass overhead console, etc., but no power windows or locks

The back of the cab had some damage to it where the bed hit it, the frame was bent down behind the rear axle, but the biggie was the frame was bent and twisted in the same area under the cab, on the passenger side.  I was afraid it would never be to my liking if they tried straightening that part of the frame.  I wasn't to worried about the part behind the axle.  Even though it was almost 9 years old, I got good money for it, $8,900.  Almost half of what I paid for it.  That happened in December '99, and it was gone from the salvage yard by February '00.  The insurance company said they took it to Wytheville, Va for auction.  Whoever got it, got a great engine.  Never had a problem out of it or a leak.  Never really had any kind of problem out of it actually.  Changed the starter a couple times, and that was it.
