Looking to get Westers ... need more info...

I think im goingto go ahead with the westers 89/91 tune for my 8.1L, but I need more info. Where is the computer located in my truck? Is it hard to get out? How much horsepower will I gain from that tune? Gas mileage with 3D mapping worth it? Shift firmness? Looking to increase my performance slightly with mainly a gas mileage improvement.

I have a 2001. I'd think they are in the same place on a 2002. It's on the drivers side just behind the radiator and below the upper radiator hose. It's not that hard to get out. You should be able to remove and reinstall in about 20 minutes (first time). The cover pops loose easily. There is a harness clip in the cover that you'll have to remove. You also have to loosen the screws that hold the connectors in place. There are a couple of clips to remove to get the computer out. I can do it in about 5 minutes now. Don't forget to disconnect the batteries.

I had the 89-91 tune before they had the 3d mapping. Performance was better, mileage was about the same. I just upgraded to a 91-93 tune with the 3D mapping. Performance is much better. It pulls to 95 very well. Gas mileage improved about 1 to 1.5 mpg local driving. I haven't had a chance to take a longer trip yet. I've only put one tank of gas through it since I changed computers. Headers and exhaust go on in a couple of weeks. We'll see what that does.

I've seen numbers on the 8.1L showing anywhere from 20-35 HP depending on what exactly you ask for. Mileage tunes will generate a little less HP. Higher octane tunes will generate a little more HP and MPG. 3D mapping doesn't cost anymore and should generate a little more MPG (all relative) on the 8.1L.

You can order whatever shift firmness and torque management numbers you desire.

Thats what I mean. What shift firmness do I want? I dont want it to jerk, just firm enough to notice and assist the extra HP. Should I go ahead with the higher tune? And torque managment, I know what it is, my truck is eat up with it. Wont even spin a tire off the line. How much do I request to be taken out? I dont want to damage anything either. Just trying to get the numbers right....

And which is better...westers or wait 4 me?

last i heard is that lyndon can't ajust the tranny shift points or firmness on the allison just what they told me. when did they start the 3d mapping just wondering its the first in heard of it? might have to trader in.

for the money a Wait 4 me tune is better

they both seem to give the same results

plus wait4me is a sh*t load cheaper save money so you can go fishin

hope this helps

ps the wait 4 me tune woke my 8.1 up an thats with the stage 1 tune with the gas milage thing turned on

I thought jesse couldn't tune trucks with the allison because of the separate computer, but either way get a tune, the truck will be literally 10 times better

ok to awnser the ally question

YES he can tune a truck with a allison i know thats whats behind my 8.1l

wait4me performance is a newer tuner and he will bump his price up one of these days but for now he is keeping it low to get more ppl to try him out plain and simple

BRING MORE PPL IN AND THE WORD GETS OUT its just good biz

now im not saying that different tunners dont do different things but on this compairison feel and fuel milage are identical

idk who said that jessie dosent tune trucks with allys but i know he dose so thats that plain and simple get a tune and you will love ur truck all over again

Supercop, I have the same concerns with my 8100 and Allison. I dont know the optimum shift firmness or points, and am not sure how much TM to remove, before I start having problems and the dealer blames the tune. I want improved gas mileage, and more HP. Any one here with the tune on the 8.1, what settings did you recommend and what was the result?
