Ping like a can

Hi

Any ideas where to look or what would cause it. About two weeks ago my 01 GMC Sierra Z71 pickup started making this Boeing sound sometimes when you are driving and sometimes when it's just sitting there. Maybe two or three times a day I hear it. I've owned it since new and never heard it before. It a let embarrassing It's not new anymore but it's not a old tin can.

Exhausts go boing from heat expansion and contraction, does it do it when hot and cooling down?

I've heard it when the truck has been sitting in the driveway not driven at all that day.

 

It sounds like the gas tank to me it's quite loud like empty steel 45 gal barrel.

 

My exhaust just makes the ting ping hot sounds like usual

Mine does the same thing, its the muffler,I know it sounds like the gas tank, but its not.... I was actually under the truck and was lucky enough to hear it happen (was changing the oil).

 

Change out the muffler and it will go away. If its not that big of a deal, just leave it alone
