replacing belt on a 00' GMC SAVANA

I have a 2000 GMC SAVANA 2500 w/ a 5.0L. The alternator went out this week @ 217K and as I was replacing the alternator I found that my old belt had many cracks in it and I needed to replace it. I went to my local parts dealer and got the AC DELCO belt. I knew that the size for the belt was correct since the belt size varied according to the alternator and I already knew what kind of replacement alternator I was getting. However, I just can't slide the belt onto the last pulley even with the tensioner retracted to the max. Is it supposed to be an extremely tight fit for new belts or is there something wrong? The tensioner works fine and I double checked the routing, everything was correct. Temorarily I'm reusing the old belt with cracks; the old one slipped back on with ease so I was wondering what the problem was? Thanks in advance, Luke.

If its the correct belt then the easist is to run the belt over every pulley except the waterpump. Since the W/P pulley does not have a shoulder you can slide the belt on much easier.
