First oil change

I've looked at 15 pages of info on this board about this subject & didn't see anything about it. I'm buying a 2006 5.3 Silverado & need to know when I can switch the engine oil to synthetic. I know that some high performance cars come with synthetic oil from the factory, but is the first oil change at 500 miles ok to switch to synthetic?

 

If not, then when is the best milage to switch?

 

Also, I know the rear diff comes with synthetic lube, what about the front? If it doesn't, whern can you switch to synthetic in the front diff? Same goes for the transfer case & transmission.

The oil's not changed at 500 miles. It's not even changed at 3000 miles. It's changed when the "change oil" light comes on. I have 5200 miles on my '05 Colorado and haven't changed it yet.

 

You can switch to synthetic whenever you like. As for the front axle... no, it does not contain synthetic. It's standard 80W-90. GM Part# 1052271. I know of no reason why you couldn't put synthetic in the front axle.

I appreciate the info. However, I wont be waiting for the "change oil light" to come on before I change the oil for the first time. Too much assembly lube & possible contaminants in the engine to be left in there for that long.

We don't put in anything other than what GM recommends, so I can't comment on that. I'm sure they're probably okay to use, if they meet GM's specs. If you have a problem and they go into the component and notice the fluid looks odd, you can prove that, even though it's not the original stuff, it meets the specs. Otherwise, you might be facing a battle that you put something in not approved, they'll blame the fluid and they won't warranty the repairs.
