Shaking 06

Hello Mr GM tech.

I have an 06 Vortec Max cc 4x4 and it will shake on any road surface mainly noticable at freeway speeds but I can feel it also at lower speeds. Its sorta like 2 seconds on and 1 sec off.

It also has pretty bad brake shake at freeway speeds and the dealer has already cut the drums and rotors but it has come back.

The dealer has road forced the tires and checked the alignment and rotated the tires but its the same.

I know there is a buletin on these Bridgstone tires but the vibration comes and goes.

The foreman at the dealer drove with me and said he thought it was beam shake but I have felt beam shake before and that to me was more of a bucking sensation.

I am thinking about putting some new BF goodrich Al Terains on it but if that doesn't help then I may just open a whole new can of worms.

Another thing to throw out there.I had towed my 6,000 lb trailer at about 1,000 miles and the diff got real hot.It was at 290 deg and all the other trucks were at arount 180-190 deg and it is clunking pretty bad.Not sure if that has anything to do with things but I do feel the diff may be a problem down the rd.

Do all the new crew cabs shake like this?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Phil

Also I should note that it did not do this when new and I have about 4,500 mile on her.

I own a 2005 Crew Cab and it DOES NOT shake at all at any speed. I am not a tech but I would think that either a bad ball joint or the braking system is causing the brake shake. Has the truck thrown any codes? I would keep on the dealers ass untill this problem is corrected, Worse comes to worse you might have grounds for a lemon law case. As far as the differential heating up and clunking, I would have the dealer check that out soon, just dont tell them you were towing and overheated it.

Have the dealer swap out the tires and wheels for a test. I bet it's one or the other. Probably 2 wheels or tires out of round, and they get in sync and then out of sync every 3 seconds.

We have not seen ANY brake vibration problems on the trucks. That's not to say it can't happen, but it is definitely not a common occurance.

The easiest way for the dealer to eliminate the wheels/tires is to swap a set from another, new truck. Naturally you'd want to drive the other truck first to verify it is okay. Then, put 'em on your truck and go from there. That'll tell you whether or not it is a wheel/tire issue.

You might want to ask them if they have an EVA (electronic vibration analyzer). This will read out the vibration in G forces and hertz and can really help to nail down the source. If you know the frequency of the vibration at its strongest, you can figure out whether or not it's from a tire, driveline, etc.

Someone else around here asked about diff temps before. I have no clue about that. It's not something we ever felt a need to measure nor is there any specification that we could go by even if we did measure it. It's interesting to note that the new Z06 Corvette has a diff cooler.

Yes that was me a while back talking about the differential temp.

The only thing that leads me away from the diff is that there is no noise on decel, accel or coasting.

I put the truck on the rack and ran it and at 40 mph it shook badly from the rear end area.

I road forced the rear tires and they were near perfect.

Its looking like there is a problem with the rear end.

I'll be taking her in after the holidays.

Thanks for all the help

Not a good test at all. Even the slightest imbalance in the tires that you'd never feel on the road can cause a lot of shaking when the wheels are just hanging. If you think it's the rear-end, which is highly unlikely, remove the wheels and do the same test. I would say it should still have a vibration with the wheels off if it's the rear-end.

How many pounds was each tire?

One was 13 lb on one and 10lb on the other and both balanced at zero weight.

Not sure on other manufactures limits but on Mercedes it 26 lbs for the cars and a bit more for the trucks.
