i have a 95 GMC siera ext cab s/b 1/2 ton 4x4 with a 6.5 in it.......the engine smokes bad and kinda knocks a bit i noticed that the head gasket is gone i was wondering if the head gasket would cause the smoke and noise and could i jus buy a new head gasket and put it in and would it be fixed.....i checked the oil and it had no filings in it.....any help would b nice

How did you notice the head gasket is gone? And if it is, why is it gone? Simply replacing the gasket may not be the answer. The heads need to be sent out, checked for cracks (not unusual in these) and for straightness. I wouldn't go through all the work of pulling a head without sending it to the machine shop to have it checked. You don't want to have to be pulling this thing apart a second time when you still have a problem because the heads weren't checked.

i noticed it was gone because it started smoking and running rough then i checked under the hood and everything was coverd in oil and i checked more and concluded that is was coming from the head gasket. i dont knwo why it happend and iw as wondering wat damage could ocur like top and bottem end thanks for your time

No oil passes through the head gasket. If the engine is covered in oil (not terribly unusual for a 10 year old diesel ), it is most likely has nothing to do with the head gasket.

 

And, diesels tend to smoke a LOT when there's a fuel delivery problem. It can be white (unburned diesel) or black smoke. So don't just assume it's a head gasket. These engines are famous, or should I say infamous, for injector pump problems.
