I'm looking into getting a compact truck/SUV and have been looking at the S10/Sonoma, Jimmy/Blazer and the Bravada. Is there really any difference between S10 vs Sonoma and Jimmy vs Blazer? I know the Bravada comes with AWD, so that's obviously a difference. I think I'm leaning towards the Bravada for the AWD. Is the AWD meant for offroad and onroad? I know the parttime 4WD arent meant for road..

AWD does not really match up to 4WD. There's generally no low-range gearing on an AWD, so it doesn't have the same pulling power. All that really sets it apart from a normal 2wd is that it has a center differential, which allows all 4 wheels to have power applied while on normal pavement. A 2wd with a rear locking differential will give you a lot more traction than a AWD, at least in my opinion.

If you're looking at newer models, then the S-10/Sonoma or Jimmy/Blazer is not being produced anymore. They've been replaced by the Colorado/Canyon and Trailblazer/Envoy respectively. The Colorado (which I have now) is not too bad and my rear locking diff has been pretty handy offroad so far.

I have a newer style Bravada with AWD and it is not for off road. I am not a big fan of this AWD, I would rather have the slectable 4x4 like a Blazer or Jimmy. Also the AWD is in all the time and I have some kind of clunk coming from my AWD...dealer doesnt know what it is and they told me they cant fix it unless it breaks completely. The Bravada is nicer, but I really regret the full time AWD.

Is there really any difference between the Jimmy and Blazer? I think I might go for the Ford Explorer if I go the midsize SUV way..

I used to know Ford Service Manager who referred to them as "Ford Exploders"

If that means anything to you.

Such a bitter rivalry between ford and gm...

Everyone on the ford forums calls them ford exploders too, if they were 'exploding' i think they might have a recall.
