Ok i understand that it is an alluminum block but what gives this beast the extra 15hp over the iron 5300 design? More compression, computer tunes different...what?

I never have read what the actual difference is. Maybe aluminum adds 15hp kinda like a jegs sticker adds 5hp.

According to the Chevrolet website, which is chock full o' knowledge, the difference is compression ratio. 9.5 to 1 is the standard 5.3, the H.O. is 9.9 to 1.

zippy's right.

The heads and camshaft (They are different part numbers from the non-HO 5300) and the compression difference.

Whatever they did it works.  My 5.3 smothers my buddies in there 6 liters.

You cant compair the 5.3 to the 6.0 in most cases since the 6.0 is considered a HD in a 2500 or 3500. They are geard different and heaver trucks.

Correct...I assume he is meaning in a drag race. If he is then he would smoother a 6.0L HD. If both were factory. Put a load behind...well from what all i have heard the 5.3 with 4.10s may even out pull it. :D

I know I know them are fighting words. :D

I'd imagine I can compare them all I want, powerwise. Apples to oranges mostly otherwise. I think it's just funny, because alot of my buddies rag on me for getting a "light duty" and they have purchased 6.0 HD's for the extra power only to find out they're slugs in that department. For towing and hauling yeah, they got me beat torque and weight wise.
