Headlight Adjustment

Recommended Posts

If I was sitting on a level area, what horizontal distance would I need to be away from a vertical surface (garage door) and what approximate height should the headlights be reflecting onto the garage door at that horizontal distance?

Thanks,

Jeff,

I have a Haynes Manual, and for a stock truck, this is what it says:

-----

- Park 25 feet away from wall,

- Position masking tape vertically on the wall in reference to the centerline of the vehicle, as well as the centerline of both headlights.  (You'll use 3 sperate pieces of tape)

- Position masking tape in a horizontal line in reference to the centerline of all the headlights.  It may be easier to place the tape on the wall with the truck parked just a few inches away.  (This piece will cross over the other pieces that are installed vertically)

- Adjustments should be made with truck sitting level, the gas tank half full, and no heavy load in the vehicle.

- start with low beams.  Position the high intensity zone so it is two inches below the horizontal line and two inches to the side of the vertical line, away from oncoming traffic.

- With the high beams on, the high intensity zone zone should be vertically centered with the exact center just below the horizontal line.  Note: It may not be possible to position the headlight aim exactly for the high and low beams.  If a comprimise must be made, keep in mind that the low beams are the most used and have the greatest effect on drivers safety.

It then says to take it to a service department to have them adjusted at the earliest opportunity.    :lookaround:

With that being said, to adjust for the body lift, I would guess you would just adjust the lights 3 more inches to the "up and down" adjustments, in addition to what is recommended.  I havn't adjusted mine at all yet.  So far the few times I've driven it at night since the lift, no other drivers have seemed to have a problem with it.  If I find that it's blinding other people, I'll make some adjustments.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Tom I appreciate the feedback! I have not been high beamed as of yet but I thought I would lower them to compensate for the additional lift. :yingyang:
