Lund roll up or Extang roll up

I heard that the Lund has plastic snaps, is this true? If it is then that's out for me. Had a Extang with those and they broke.

Just ordered my new Extang Full-Tilt yesterday with Platinum vinyl. After talking to my retailer I was told that Extang is manufacturing covers for sale at Walmart and CTC(Canada) and are made with plastic snaps and a thinner vinyl. The Platinum cover comes with thicker vinyl and stainless steel snaps, reinforced corners.

I could never go with vinyl myself. Simply way too easy for a thief or a punk kid to slash it with a knife. Plus, I saw what guys have to go through with all those snaps and then rolling it... what a pain in the butt. :sigh: I'm partial to the steel/aluminum covers that automatically retract using gas shocks. No hassle open/close and protection from thieves that includes a deadbolt lock.

However, the flip side to vinyl is that it's really cheap; about half the price of most decent aluminum covers and if security is never a question for you then it's perfect.

I also don't care for the fiberglass hinged covers, either. They look nice but they're a pain in the butt, too if you ever need full use of your bed. You have to remove the cover and then where are you going to put it w/o getting it all messed up? I know no one asked for my opinion but that's just my $0.02. :driving:

Extang platinum is what I've had on my last 3 trucks so I quess I'll stick with them. Sold one at work but customer complained about not laying down on tailgate, because of the tailgate cover being so thick. Anybody want to chime in on this problem?

You have some good points, but security risk aside, vinyl is still an inexpensive way to protect cargo from weather. As mentioned, it also allows one quick and easy access to load taller items. Also, pending on the brand, I've got some friends up north that have had trouble with the retractable aluminum freezing during winter. I'm curious to hear if anyone else has had such problems.

Well, get a little water on the vinyl and some subzero temperatures and you have yourself a frozen cover. :driving: You'd probably just have to scrape it off to roll it. What brand are your friends up north's aluminum retracting covers? Just curious for the sake of building some pros/cons against different retractable covers. I guess IF water got into the track where the rollers are and then froze up I could see it being a problem. However, if it were just snow and extremely cold weather, there's really nothing else to freeze up. Even if the 'wheels/roller barings' themselves froze, the gas shocks will still pull the cover back.

Had an Extang(platinum) and thought it was great. I loved the snaps that flip for when it is cold, and the spring loaded bows. It was kind of a pain (literally, 32 degrees and rain, your hands would hurt) when it was cold and nasty, but otherwise it was fine.

32 degrees isn't cold, that's a nice spring day around here :chevy:

As far as problems with vinyl in the cold, I didn't have any problems with my Access vinyl cover this winter, temps got down to about 40 below on a few days.

Of course, it was brand new, so I have no idea how it will hold up at those temperatures in a year or two.

That's another great point... Cold and raining, who wants to fool around with getting a cover unsnapped and rolled up? :chevy: Of course, myself even with my automatically retracting aluminum cover, I'll wait for the rain to stop at least. :D

Last winter I bought a new roll-up vinyl cover from Trucksport.com. No snaps at all. I will whole-heartedly suggest getting this cover. It is Trucksports own cover. One of the BIG companies make it for them, but trucksport puts their name on it. And it was only like $250. I will NEVER go back to a snap on cover again and the metal roll-up covers are way out of my price range! They are like $700 for a cheap one and about $1100 for the better ones. No matter what you decide, definetely check out the Trucksport website. They were the best priced when I was shopping a few months ago.

You're a little off on your prices. :chevy: They're about $499 for a good sturdy aluminum automatically retracting cover that also has a built in dead-bolt lock. Believe me, if they were $700+ I would never have gotten one. I know there are a few that are 'better' than mine but the only difference is that the 'better' ones can withstand 300lbs standing on them whereas mine is rated to hold like 50 or so. But, that'd be stupid to set anything on top of any cover while transporting stuff. I mean that's what the cover is for is to COVER what's in the bed; not provide a platform for stuff to slide off of. But, if $499 isn't out of your price range, http://www.peragon.com/ - they're the cheapest of that style that I've found.
