Cheap Lowering Idea.

Cutting torch+original spring=lowered truck...

I cut a few rungs, off the coils of my 88 Blazer back in my wilder days, put a set of blocks in the rear and presto. Lowered ride.

Spring compressors do not work. I helped install some on a 99 Z28 and they broke, all three times. Cutting with a torch ruins the springs, so I would go with one of the cheaper lowering packages offered. Just my two cents.

If you're gonna cut your springs which I don't reccommend AT ALL, use a sawzall to do the least damage to them. Heating up them up ruins the spring rate even more than just cutting them.

No worries there, I would never try to cut the springs just to save some cash.

Taking a hacksaw is the safest and most irritatingly slow way to make a spring ride lower. In some cases, it works too!

For example, the 460# springs that aftermarket suppliers sell for 68-82 Corvettes are simply the 550# springs with a few coils added. Hacking one up will give you a 550# spring as well as about a 2" drop.

The problem is, you really don't know what you'll end up with when you cut springs. It's a lot of effort to do, if you cut too much you're SOL, and if you cut too little you just have to do it again. Never cut more than a 1/4 coil at a time, unless you know what you're going to get.

All that said - a lowering kit that gives you a known drop is probably best. Lowering spindles are better than lowering springs in that most of the ride is preserved - any lowering through modifying/replacing the spring is going to result in a stiffer ride.

The spring compressors actually damage the springs, stay away from those. I used the shackle and hanger/control arm drop on both my '94 ECSB, and my '96 ECSB, they both rode and drove very nicely.
