Intermediate Steering Shaft, Again.

I have a 2000 Suburban with 94,400 miles.

The intermediate steering shaft has been serviced six times (re-greased) in the life of the vehicle, and then a new GM recommended shaft installed (see next paragraph).

The last time I took it to my local dealer, I was told that GM had a newly designed shaft which should eliminate the problem once and for all. I had the old one removed and the new one installed at a total cost of $240 for parts, labor and tax. This was done on July 6, 2005 at 84,852 miles.

Now, only ten months and 9,600 miles later, the new shaft has play and the steering feels loose, again. The dealer confirmed that it is the intermediate steering shaft again, and informed me that GM will not cover this under the 12 months, 12,000 miles warranty even though it clearly states on the repair invoice from the dealer that "Parts and labor are guaranteed for 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first." :D

To make it worse, I have been told that greasing this steering shaft will cost $120.00 because of the new design!!

I do not drive this car hard. In fact, I am very easy on it. I do most of my own work and take care of my vehicles. I love this car except for the continual steering shaft problem.

Has anyone had to deal with this? Am I wrong in feeling that this should be covered under the warranty? It was a newly designed and recommended, by the dealer, GM part, not just another re-grease.

Suggestions?

Thanks for your input.

if the warranty specifically claims that it is covered, then I'd suggest taking it to another dealer, or dealing with a higher up untill you get the answer you want. warranty denial is a messy process, but if you squeak loud enough, someone will get it taken care of.

Here is the latest. I asked to talk to the Service Manager and when he called back he said it is not a warranty issue because there isn't anything wrong with the new shaft, it just needs grease. We went round and round and he finally did agree to re-grease this new shaft at no charge and hope he can recover it from GM.

Hopefully the dealer uses the new white grease. The new shafts were determined to not fix the problem, so they switched grease from black to white. Obviously, you should get GM to pay for it any way you can, but if it comes back and they won't cover it, it is a really easy fix and the lu be kit only costs $20. I just did it a couple weeks ago. That being the case, it is ridiculous that this problem continues - the white grease really better fix the problem!
