Air Conditioning Question

2003 Tahoe Z71..... 60,000 miles

The air was working fine than I heard two growling noises than no more cold air. A friend looked at it and said the belt was gone but the condensor turned smoothly.

I went to a local shop this am and they want $950 to fix it. They claim the condensor is bad and the dryer needs to be replaced. They never even put the truck in the air.

Any thoughts ??

If the belt is off and the compressor clutch spins I would put a belt on it first and see what you have.

The only way a condensor could be bad is if there is a hole in it or all the fins are mashed flat not letting any air thru it.

If it was cooling fine before, the fins are probably not mashed.

If the condensor has a hole, the R134a would leak out and the compressor would not come on. It wouldn't throw the belt.

If the compressor seized, it might throw the belt.

Is it possible they said compressor and not condensor.

If the system is going to be open for any long period of time, they typically change out the receiver/dryer/accumulator.

If the compressor seized, the entire system will need to be flushed.

They don't need to put the truck in the air to diagnose the AC ???
