getting a new cd player installed

I went to best buy to get a new CD player, I was going to get either a 200 dollar alpine or Pioneer. When I asked the sales guy about installation, he said they do free installations, but the dash kit costs 30, and all GM's after 2001 have a computer or something in a harness that has to be replaced or something in order to put in an aftermarket CD player, so the total installation would cost 150 after tax, on top of the 200 dollar CD player, I said hell no. Is this true, or are they overpricing this computer harness deal, or is it really this expensive? If so Ill have to keep my stock CD player, which I dont really like, but I can live with it. Did it cost you guys this much for installation on a '01 or newer silverado or sierra?

Basically the door chimes and some dash instrumentation is routed through the factory head unit. You should be able to get the harness for about $50 bucks. With a little luck, you might be able to get a local car audio shop to bypass all of the harness crap for you.

I had the same problem with my 04 cavalier....hated how GM puts the chime through the speakers. Pretty much just reinforced why i refuse to buy a new chevy.

do you have onstar? if so he may be talking about installing one of the PAC modules....I just installed a new Pioneer in my 02 and was going to install the PAC also and then blew it off because of the way it wires up.

Well here's what Crutchfield has:

Installation Details for your 2003 Silverado 1500

» Because your vehicle is factory-equipped with a special sound system, you will need to purchase an adapter that allows you to keep your factory door chime (needed to keep audible safety warnings functioning) and provides a switched 12-volt power source for your new radio. Crutchfield strongly recommends that you not replace this vehicle's factory radio without using a recommended adapter.

Metra VT-GMRC-01 $79.99

Well that beats $120 + tax. But still gotta get the dash kit and what not. Im still looking around.

Edit: oh I found this too:

If the vehicle has factory XM it will be lost if factory radio is replaced.

» Because of the configuration of the factory dash, flip out monitors may not work in this vehicle.

Also, I've got the radio controls on the Steering wheel, I'll probobly loose that with an aftermarket CD player wont I?

Did you go through the whole process of picking out the deck and adding the accessories? They give you a break on the adaptor if you buy a deck and they include the dash kit and wiring harness for free. One of the reasons I bought my pioneer deck was because they offered a converter (PAC SWI-PS) that let you use the steering wheel controls. see my sig.

No, but I'll look into it, I didnt know they did that. Free Dash kit wiring harness, and shiipping and Handleing sounds great! I've got a buddy that can install all of it to, he's a huge car audio person. I can install it myself but he's a perfectionist about everything, so if I order it me and him should be able to intall it no problem. Im going to look into the steering wheel converter.

EDIT: I saw the Pioneer you got, I was looking at that one or the 180 dollar version. I think it was 180$ anyways...

How much was that steering wheel adapter? they list it for $59.59
