slimjim2525 Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 Well I'm going back to a toyota. Just bought an 06 tundra double cab. After 27 months and five trips to the dealer, that's it. First the intermediate steering shaft, then the driveline clunk, then both ext cab windows pop off the latch, then the radio dies, now my a/c is blowing hot air. truck only has 43k on it.
redvett Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 More U.S. money going overseas. Pretty soon you will be looking for a job over there yourself.
boakes Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 More U.S. money going overseas. Pretty soon you will be looking for a job over there yourself. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I don't want to start anything, remember I drive a chevy, but I recently saw an article that compared a ford mustang with a toyota sienna which showed that 65% of the mustang components came from the U.S. versus 90% of the sienna's came from the U.S. Plus it seems more ford and gm's are manufactured in canada or mexico than the U.S. and honda and toyota are going out of their way to build plants in the U.S. The way I look at it, it is a toss up as to where your money really goes. Just my 2 cents.
redvett Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 GM,Ford & Chrysler are USA based and the money stays here but the foreign companies are based overseas and that is where there mony goes and our trade deficit goes up more with every import owned company.
67ChevyRedneck Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 The newer tacomas and tundras are both being plauqued with A/C and transmission issues. Good luck with it.
jhm Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 Toyota is not the company it once was. There was a time in the '70's when they were fighting an uphill battle to win over US loyal car buyers. They did it with exceptional QC. Too bad once you get fat you sometimes get lazy too. http://www.cnn.com/2006/BUSINESS/08/25/toy...y.ap/index.html
svensk Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 Yes, Toyota is being stretched way too thin right now because of their popularity. Quality is going downhill rapidly. Even most of the '07 camry reviews are fairly negative on build quality.
mtbon Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 Good luck to you. I have owned both a Toyota and Chevy trucks and believe all vehicles have their flaws and quirky points. My '86 Toyota truck was just not strong enough for what I wanted to do. I went through 3 transmissions and 4 clutches, engine ran great though. My Chevy truck does much stronger work with less wear and tear. It's all what you need them for.
KEVPOPPAPUMP Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 All trucks will have their problems which is a shame since the margin for profit is normally higher on light trucks. Some will have minor ones and others major ones. I had a Ford Ranger and swore off Ford after that POS (4 - 4.0 engines/3 - 5R55E transmissions). The quality was crap and reliability was even worse. I do give it to Ford for great Warranty coverage because the tab was at $16K before the truck was totaled. The Dodge Ram had the best engine I've ever owned (Cummins) but the quality (leaking weatherstrips), materials (plastic), and fit/finish (lots of rattles) left for some improvement. As much as others knock Dodge trannies, the 48RE behind the Cummins was great. My current GMC Sierra has it's fare share of quirks (intermediate shaft knock, squeaking driver's side door) both of which the dealer fix lasts for a good month or two tops. Also, what is up with the un-centered steering wheel? It all comes down to how much you actually like your truck. If you like it a lot, the little things will be non-issues over the big picture. I am not overly thrilled with this GMC by the way, but it does start everytime and gets me where I need to go.

Good luck with it. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I doubt that. I have been lurking on Tundra websites for a couple months now, all I see there is how happy people are with there truck, and see no posts what so ever about tranny or a/c problems. I see over there most posts were related to accessories, modifying the truck, gas mileage, or whatever, but very few about problems. Here, the first page had 14 of the 24 posts were related to problems with there trucks. I have always had a toyota prior to this chevy, and none were ever in the shop for any reason. I don't regret buying the chevy, it was what i needed at the time, but it just had too many small issues that bugged the hell out of me.

I did not realize just how many foreign companies there were here until I started working for one. Most operate under names that don't look foreign at all. Just look at the GM credit card, issued by HSBC.

The Tundra is a great truck, the first two model years had there share of problems, but every truck does. The thing that always got to me about driving a Tundra...it's just not the man's man truck that the Silverado is. The interior is small compared to the other full sizes, the motor is a bit smaller, and the truck has very conservative styling. Enough bad about the Tundra, the truck is also a very reliable vehicle that I am sure you will enjoy. It might not pull the load that the Silvy can, but it can sure give you all its got on a consistent basis...Good luck with it

Toyota.... about 8-900,000. I've spent a lot of time on Toyota furums too, the girlfriend has an '05 that's has quite a few quality concerns, the biggest of which is an irratic shifting and jerky tranmission (the 5 speed auto). Supposedly this same tranny is in the Tundras as well?? That's what a couple people mentioned on Toyotanation.com??? http://toyotanation.com/forum/showthread.php?t=144311 I don't feel like digging up more posts, but my 7 year old silverado has none of the above mentioned problems your truck had, so maybe you'll have zero with your Tundra. It's really almost a crap shoot with new vehicles anymore.....
