Broken seat!

Anyone else experienced this?

I was up until 3.30am this morning working on my drivers seat.

Got into the truck yesterday and leaned back a little to reposition myself...nothing unusual about that...except CRACK!!!! Turned out the frame around the mounting bolt on the front right corner broke.

I got called into work so I decided to fix it whilst I was there.

Pulled the drivers seat out, made a piece of sheet metal to go right across the frame with the holes in the right places and tig welded it all together. This after I tig'd the broken piece back in first.

Not happy....I'm a big guy, but there are alot bigger guys out there than me! I would have thought this would be a serious safety issue

These seats are apparently made to accomodate a person of average size and weight - no more than 200-230 lbs.

Yeah i'm 6'6" and 280 and my seat has squeaked Forever and they just keep greasing it and that will fix it for about a month than whammo the squeak is back

My '94 had a similar problem, I noticed it after a trip to the tranny shop. The Technician was well over 300lbs.....

Well I'm around 240!

In looking at the frame, all that would be needed is for the overlapping corners to be welded in the factory. I could twist the frame by hand!

Exact same thing on my parents' '94 last yr. Yeah you would think that would be a bit of a safety issue!!

Looks like I better not gain any weight. I am around 200 lbs and have not experienced seat problems yet, but it is too early to tell.

Maybe GM is trying to tell us that we need to go on a serious diet?

I dont think the genral makes seats strong enuf.

Father in Law is 400 pounds, he broke the seats in all 5 GM trucks he had over the years.

when a SOB is that big, the have trouble moving around and they just murder a seat.

that notwithstanding, the Ford and Dodge he has now still have a seatback attached to the base so I think some of it is the Generals fault.

This guy would probably break the seat in a D9 Cat bulldozer.

This thread was just too good to not resurrect. By the way, I found the answer to my seat-bolt question in the archives. Thanks '05 quadrasteer.

"The bolts will have a funny look to them, just use a 6 point 11mm and 15mm deep socket to get them off. That is what I used to remove my seats a couple weeks ago. I don't remember which size was for the front and back, but they are different sizes. In fact the fronts are nuts with the backs being bolts.
