Intermitant ignition/starting problem

1990 4.3 manual stardard transmission. Full size 2 wheel drive.

No security system. No modifications. 130,000 miles. Original starter. No accidents. No rust.

I have read some posts with similiar problems. And did a few searches.

The problem started about 3 years ago. Truck dead. Key turns on regular dash lights and all I get is one click. Truck towed to dealer. Replaced a $10.00 (neutral safety switch?) - black plunger type switch on inside firewall that gets depressed when clutch pedal is depressed. This plunger switch allows truck to start.

I purchased a spare switch. The problem happens about every 3 or 4 months. At first, I thought it was the switch. But I have replaced this switch about 8 times over 3 years. And I don't think this is the problem. Two times ago, I put new switch in and no start. Called AAA. But cancelled after 45 minutes as vehicle did start. I replaced switch back and forth with new one and old one and it finally started. This leads me to believe that time has something to do with this probem or heat or something else.

This last time, I was on a hill and just rolled truck and popped clutch in gear and it started right up.

Someone suggested it may be solenoid and/or starter. I have no idea if the solenoid is part of the starter.

Any suggestions?

Gee, what's with all these starting problems on older trucks. I think I replied to two others with a similar problem today alone!

The solenoid itself can be replaced on your starter. As I said in a similar post, check for voltage at the solenoid terminal right at the starter when this problem occurs. While holding the key in start position, you should have at least 10 volts to that terminal.

If you do have at least 10 volts, it's a starter problem. Most likely a solenoid, but it could be an armature problem since the ground path for the solenoid is through the armature.

It's unlikely all these clutch switches are going bad.

Thanks for all the help.

I think my problem was mis-diagnosed the very first time at the Chevrolet dealership. That is where they replaced that neutral safety switch. And each time I have had this problem, I replaced the switch. So I purchased a bunch of switches for 10 bucks each.

Finally, it dawned on me that after 16 years maybe I should replace the actual starter motor. Got a remanufactured one. Problem solved.

Thanks.
