Has anyone been to this area? What is there to do? Where is a good place to stay? Any help would be appreciated. I am thinking of going here after my wedding in June. Not planning a big trip since my fiancee is still in school and we will be limited on time before she has to get back for summer school :)

It is a nice area to visit. If you like golf then you will be in heaven. When I got to Seymour Johnson AFB here in NC back in 84 I use to go down to MB every weekend in the summer. It is a 2 1/2 hour drive from here. A ton has changed since then and that area has grown. There is a huge shopping area called Broadway At The Beach That link pretty much explains it all as to what to do. You are also about 2 hours from Charleston SC which is another cool place to go to.

As for a place to stay, well that is up to what ever hotel you like. We like Hampton Inn's. but there are a ton of others and a ton on the beach. Book it now because it gets busy down there. At least when you are going down Bike Week will be over, that is in the spring time. We enjoy it when we go down. Are you driving or flying? If you fly in you will be flying into what use to be Myrtle Beach AFB. It closed back in the early 90's.

For got to add the House of Blues and Dixie Stampede are two more major attractions.

Go every other year for the past decade. I know most of it like the back of my hand. Are you looking for the beach, golf, relaxation?? How long do you want to stay? We stay for a week, actually south of Myrtle Beach itself.

One Ocean Place

This is where we stay. Not overcrowded with a ton of people and the weekly price keeps rif-raf out, but if you figure it nightly, it is as cheap as most other places and it offers a lot more. Right next door to a little place called the Conch Cafe. If you want to know about great resturaunts, places to go, let me know. Broadway at the Beach is nice, further north is Barefoot Landing, there is a brand new HUGE mall on 17, downtown is a ton of places more for teenagers. Golf, par 3 golf, adventure golf is absolutely everywhere and things like go-carts, batting cages, etc. are plentiful as well. Jet-dki rentals, boat rides, deep sea fishing, you name it, it is out there. There are shows to see and the best attraction is the beach itself.

It is hugely commercialized, but you can find good places to go and things to see. As was mentioned before, Charleston is a couple hours away and 1.5 hours to the south is one of many Charleston Plantations to visit if you are into history.

I just booked us again for July a couple days ago.

We watch the real estate market out there closely, that is one of the top places we will likely move to when the kids get out of college.

Narrow down what you might like to do and I can help point you in the right direction. I have seen most of it. :)

Ryan, if you need a break and depending on how you get to MB, I'm 3 miles off exit 355 on I-40. Your welcome to stop in for a break in the trip. :)

I would go down over the weekends in my youth after work and drive back early monday morning just in time for Roll Call at work. Needless to say those days are gone. Oh to be young. With the new bypass they put in around Wilmington NC it really makes it a fast trip down from here. You also got the U.S.S North Carolina Battle ship that is in Wilimington. It is cool to see and tour. You go right past it on your way to MB.

If you do end up going past Wilmington you really need to check out Carolina Beach. It is one of the few that lets you drive out onto the beach. I've been there several times and IMHO I think it is much cleaner and more laid back than the tourist traps at MB. Also, every time I have been there I've seen people bury their truck & SUVs to the axle in the sand. In addition to the USS North Carolina they have a decent aquarium, Fort Fisher, and historic Wilmington to check out.

Or you may be content buying a body board & feeding youself to the bull sharks. :) But honestly you're safer in the water than the highways.

yeah MB is a beautiful place to go, even when it's off season, and too cold to go swimming, you can go down there adn hang out at the social spots (assuming you're young or young at heart). there are millions of minigolf places and gokart tracks, and malls that make it seem like the summer between school years over and over....im actually thinknig of taking a quick 2 day trip down there in the near future
