Road Trip

Well if all goes well I will be heading west to Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls Tx the first week of Feb. Still debating on which route to take, the northern route straight out I-40 which I live 3 miles off of here in NC or to go down and get on I-20 and run it across to Dallas and then up to Wichita Falls.

 

I'll only be there for two weeks and then heading back. Instead of trying to make it in one 20hr run I will be breaking it up. I figure a twelve hour run the first day and then 8 the next.

 

Looks like the Silverado will be stretching it's wheels for the trip. I would take the jetta for the economy but with my luck I would run into some bad weather and the jetta's road skins are summer performance only.

Yeah Wichita Falls is not one of my favorite places...I would recommend taking 20 so you can run into 287 which will take you right to WF...If you took 40 you would have to hit OKC and then go down to Dallas and then over

If any of you have ever driven I-20 then you know how crappy the road is, going through Louisiana. I live in San Antonio now and have family in Wilmington, NC and travel up to there every other year. I try to avoid I-20 (through Louisiana) because the roads are horrible. When I lived there (Louisiana) I hated that Interstate because it always chewed my tires to pieces. Good luck on your trip and IF you take I-20 keep your eyes peeled for the Highway Patrol all through Lousiana. They LOVE out of state drivers. My mother drove down from NC to visit me in the past and they went the route via OKC. She said the roads were better than I-20 and it wasn't that bad of a drive.

 

Either way, enjoy the trip. I think a good road trip every once in a while does a truck some good.

I've done the trip from Baltimore to Dallas a few times. I take 40 and drop down to 30 around Texarkana (if I recall). Throughout TN 40 was a real easy drive (as of last Aug) with not too much construction, mostly flat, and tons of places for food and gas. So I would vote for I-40.

yea man, I feel that. I just came from Chattanooga, TN back into Houston, TX and I rode I-20. It definatly wasn't one of the more comfortable highways I've been on. Not to mention I went through there during some horrible thunderstorms.

Update on the trip. It is offical. I have travel papers in hand. New dates of travel are the 24th Feb to the 9th of March. Hopefully the weather will not be a problem. I'm taking my truck but I don't need a ton of snow or ice to be driving in. Wingnut, if I make it through Oakcity at a reasonable time I can stop in. I've been to the Hooters there before back in 99. I was looking at flying but they will not approve a rental car. No way am I going to be there for two weeks without a vehicle. I'm getting the Silverado all set up. All fluid changed, new plugs, O2 sensors since they have some mileage on them. The usual stuff before a long journey.

Beat me to it... Last time I drove back from the left coast I got excited when I crossed the state line into TX. I forgot it would take another 10 hours to get to Dallas.

Its probably too hard to drive clear across Alaska...too few roads!!

What you say about 1-20 in LA is very true. Even large sections of 1-10 through Louisiana are pretty pathetic.

Calculate which is the shortest route not only by distance but also by time.

Take that route to Wichita and take the other back NC

 

Albeit it's mostly freeways, but what other times in the next years will you have an opportunity to drive through America
